Shatel: It'll take time, but Big Ten West looks like good home for Huskers

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
New history lessons begin this season. The 2014 season is the first year of the rest of Nebraska footballs life.
The league realigned into new divisions. And I think these are here to stay. They make sense. Not necessarily to everyone.

The East is loaded with star power: Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State. The West is about as sexy as a cheese brat. Actually, those are considered attractive in Wisconsin and parts of Iowa.

Thats fine. Its not about star power. Nebraska can make its own star power. Its about fit.

Don't get me wrong, the correct decision was made to move to the Big 10... but I still miss the Big 12.

I'm not super happy with the Big Ten West either. If they had moved MSU to the West over Purdue, it would have made a lot more sense from a competitive standpoint. Everyone wants to make us rivals with Wisconsin, but I think MSU was more likely. We could have had some great, important games against them. Oh well. Looking forward to that Rutgers game... :/

It's like the Big 12 North all over again except now were playing the role of Missouri(ugh).

I dislike being in B1G more with every passing season.

When the B12 was formed everyone thought the north was the power division. Things change. What happens in a few years when Mich and PSU are looking for new coaches? Urban leaves like he always does after 3-5 years? Dantonio isn't a spring chicken. To think all will reload is a bit of a stretch.

I think fans would be more accepting of the division if Nebraska was located in western Illinois, with easy access to all the other opponents but we're out on the edge looking in.

Yup. Penn state complained about being on the edge of the conference for years.

We moved to the B1G for good reasons, but now we don't get to see Michigan, Ohio St., or Penn St. on a regular basis. This is a big sticking point of why we came.

You don't mention the most important reason the South became the better division: Talent location within the conference's footprint. When the Big12 first started the former SWC schools couldn't keep the talent in Texas cuz no one cared about the conference. Once the new league gained popularity/TV, those same recruits no longer had the necessary level of incentive to leave Texas (the increased popularity of the Big12 versus the SWC also boosted Texas schools' recruiting profiles in the South). Yes, other factors you mentioned played a part (especially for NU), but not to the extent of the conference's talent staying South.

The same is/will happen to the BTW. The vast majority of the high school talent in this conference's footprint resides in the Eastern division states. The incentive for a top prospect in the B1G footprint to go further away from home to the BTW is minimal. I'm not trying to argue that this can't be overcome with quality coaching and recruiting, but it is a major disadvantage.

I don't see the difference. We were already in a different division from OSU and that is where the big talent is. We weren't getting guys out of Michigan anyway. We won't be playing PSU yearly anymore but Illinois is totally raidable and we'll be playing there every year now.

We are in a division that doesn't have a whole lot of history besides us. And we haven't exactly lit it up as of late. But I sure don't want to make the excuse that we will wait until those coaches leaves or certain players. To be the best you have to beat the best. I really don't think our division is that much weaker either. The east has programs with ALOT of history and that's why the media Especially DB Tom thinks we are an after thought as a division.

I don't recall this at all, but then again, I'm not a fan of any of those teams. I'm a fan of Nebraska, I'll watch the Huskers if they play Lincoln southeast.

If I care to watch meatchicken or Ohio, I'll get the BTN.

The West has two perennial threats to win it all (Wisky, DoNU), two teams that will have temporary fits of competency (Iowa, Northwestern), one team on the rise (Minnesota), with Illinois and Purdue longing for basketball season.

The East has three perennial threats to win it all (tOSU, Michigan, MSU), two teams that have temporary fits of competency (Penn State, Maryland), one team flirting with competence (Indiana), and one team that is longing for basketball to start (Rutgers).

Folks need to realize that the B1G is treating us as we expected to be treated in the Big XII--as a necessary and vital football division anchor-point...and we're now complaining about it.
