Shatel: It'll take time, but Big Ten West looks like good home for Huskers

The West has two perennial threats to win it all (Wisky, DoNU), two teams that will have temporary fits of competency (Iowa, Northwestern), one team on the rise (Minnesota), with Illinois and Purdue longing for basketball season.

The East has three perennial threats to win it all (tOSU, Michigan, MSU), two teams that have temporary fits of competency (Penn State, Maryland), one team flirting with competence (Indiana), and one team that is longing for basketball to start (Rutgers).

Folks need to realize that the B1G is treating us as we expected to be treated in the Big XII--as a necessary and vital football division anchor-point...and we're now complaining about it.

I'd add Penn State to the first category of the East. They have the talent base and history that causes the other 3 to be placed in that category. They were also experiencing a mini resurgence before the penalties. Comparing those perennial threats in the East v the West, plus the location of the high school talent in this conference, its easy to understand why the West is perceived as an after-thought.

Not a fan of the divisions that's for sure. Would've felt much better about it if MSU would've been in our division. Oh well, the division is gonna come down to us and Wisconsin with an occasional Iowa run every year.

True, but right now, they're not there. Maybe in a year or two, yes...but not now. And the way Michigan is playing, I don't know if they should be considered 'upper echelon' talent, or just merely competent.

I also wouldn't count on MSU staying in that Top Echelon of teams for long, especially if Michigan can get someone to steer the ship in the right direction. IIRC, (with some minor exceptions) MSU's success is typically at the expense of Michigan's, and vice versa. Once Michigan gets rolling, MSU should step down a notch or three in the pecking order.
