Husker junior offensive lineman Matt Slauson continued to sit out practice Friday because of a shoulder injury.
Whether or not he’ll be knocking helmets in next Saturday’s season opener against Nevada is still of some question.
Husker offensive coordinator Shawn Watson is optimistic.
“Slauson’s doing good,” Watson said. “You know Slaus. He just keeps working. He’s going to be fine. He’ll roll off the shelf. He’s too ornery not to.”
If Slauson can’t go, who plays in his place? Watson didn’t provide a name.
“We’re just playing it day-to-day, because we’re still far enough away we don’t need to make those kind of calls,” Watson said. “We’re giving him a chance to get healthy and get back with us.”
Not scaling back
It was a full-pads Friday for the Huskers.
“We’re not backing off at all,” Watson said. “There’s things that we (needed) to get done (Friday) and things we need to get done (Saturday) that pertain to situational football.”
Training camp has given way to traditional in-season practices. Watson said the last few days have seen a good share of time dedicated to preparing for Nevada.
“We just need to keep grinding through it,” Watson said. “We had another really good day. You get a sense it’s all coming together.”
Recently sidelined running backs Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn continue to work out and hold up well, he said.
With the season fast approaching, Watson said coaches are daily evaluating how hard to push a practice.
“You don’t want to go out and have a foolish injury because they’re tired,” Watson said. “We’re taking a smart approach, not trying to beat ’em up too much. But then you have to get a high-speed practice done, which we always get done here.”
By the numbers
85: The amount of dollars for a ticket to the Texas game. The NU Athletic Ticket Office has announced the Oct. 27 showdown in Austin is this year’s annual student migration game. Interested full-time students of UNL must fill out applications, hand over 85 bucks, then cross their fingers and ask Dad and Mom for gas money.
Scouting report
DE Pierre Allen
The buzz about Allen became pretty loud during spring practice.
At this point, however, the redshirt freshman quietly has settled into a backup role behind junior Zach Potter at the base end position.
“I’m doing a lot of great things, but I still have a lot to learn and still a lot to improve on,” Allen said.
A native of Denver, Allen was listed at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds last season in the official Nebraska media guide. He increased his weight to as much as 275 this past spring.
“But that was a lot of fat, so I dropped a lot,” he said. “I’m at about 265 now.”
Allen said he currently is holding down a spot on Nebraska’s goal-line defense.
Opponent watch: Nevada
Ezra Butler, an All-Western Athletic Conference linebacker last season who led the team in tackles, will not play in the Wolfpack’s contest at Nebraska because of an unspecified violation of team policy.
According to the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal, Nevada coach Chris Ault said in a prepared statement: “I am certainly disappointed by this, but I know that Ezra will be a much better person and student-athlete because of these circumstances.”
Butler had been withheld from contact during fall practice because of a separated shoulder, but was expected to be ready for the opener against the Huskers. Last year, he had 71 tackles, including a WAC-best 18 for loss.
