This is the "scheme theme" month for The Solid Verbal, and they had the excellent Chris B Brown on to talk shop. Chris is a lawyer by day, and X's and O's nerd by night. He has his own site (smartfootball.com) and has written a couple really good books that talk about random football scheme stuff in common terms. I could read and listen to him all day.

Anyway, on this episode, they talked about playcalling methods, terminology and tempo. And Chris gushed over Scott Frost... alot. Specifically the way he crafts his offense, calls plays, and uses tempo.

This is a great topic, worth a listen. A huge part of what it means to define a system.

Even though he didn't go into it because it's somewhat tangential, this topic is one reason why I really like how Frost allocates responsibility amongst the offensive staff. The past several Nebraska offensive coordinators, and many other schools, have the offensive coordinator be the QB coach, and be the play caller. That's really three jobs when you think about it; coordinating the entire offense, handling the QB, and calling the play.

When the offensive coordinator is in the booth removed from these other roles, he can watch the game and make suggestions. He isn't thinking about what to tell the QB between series or figuring out the next play call. He can focus on how to fix the problem of that unblockable 3 tech. Humans aren't very good at multi-tasking. It's very hard for one person to macro level strategize, relay that information to other people with the detail level of a play call, and solve problems as they happen.

Even though the offensive coordinator doesn't get the credit he should in this system, because most everyone does it a different way, it is in my mind a better way. You have the advantage of the play caller on the field where he can better communicate, but the coordinator with the vantage in the booth.
