Game notes: Green reflects on first game action

BY BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

Sunday, Sep 06, 2009 - 01:27:22 am CDT

For the record, Cody Green’s voice is as deep as everyone says it is.

Green was heard from in the postgame room after he saw action in his first game as a Husker Saturday night.

“It was amazing. It’s what high school kids dream about whenever they get to college,” Green said after Nebraska’s 49-3 win over Florida Atlantic. “To have 85,000 people screaming your name, it sends shivers down your spine.”

The true freshman quarterback from Dayton, Texas, entered the game in place of starter Zac Lee with 12:39 left in the game and the Huskers leading 42-3.

He rolled to his right on the first pass and completed a three-yard toss to Ben Cotton. His next pass was a rocket that deflected off Kyler Reed’s hands and fell incomplete.

“They said (the pass) had a little spice on it,” Green said, smiling. “When I got to the sideline, I was like, ‘I didn’t throw it hard.’ I promise I didn’t try to throw it hard, let’s put it that way.”

Green’s first series was a three-and-out. But he came back on the next series with a 49-yard run down the sideline that brought the crowd to its feet.

“It felt like I was back in high school,” Green said. “To look up and see my linemen right with me, all I could do is say, ‘Thank you.’”

He finished the drive with a touchdown, scoring on an option play on fourth-and-goal from the 1.

Green said the last eight months in Lincoln have been a roller coaster, but “probably the best eight months of my life, seriously.”

Asked what his mindset was this offseason as he wondered if he’d play or redshirt , Green said: “I had two mindsets. There was the smart Cody and there was the athletic Cody. Smart Cody was like, ‘Ah, he needs to redshirt and learn the offense.’ And the athletic Cody was, ‘Heck, I need to get out there and play.’”

Off with the redshirts

Four other true freshmen played for the Huskers on Saturday night. As anticipated, I-back Rex Burkhead saw action as Roy Helu’s backup. His first carry came with eight minutes left in the second quarter. He finished with 39 yards on nine carries and a score.

Eric Martin also played at linebacker and on special teams. It was obvious the 245-pound Martin was anxious to hit somebody, flattening Florida Atlantic blocker Rod Huggins on the opening kickoff.

“I was geeked up,” Martin said.

Martin drew a 15-yard penalty on a personal foul for a hit he had a on a wide receiver with 4:27 left. The crowd booed and Husker coaches seemed to be displeased with the call.

Wide receiver Antonio Bell and long-snapper P.J. Mangieri also played.

Linebacker talk

Junior Blake Lawrence ended up getting the start at WILL linebacker instead of sophomore Mathew May. Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini said they wanted a veteran guy starting alongside redshirt freshmen Sean Fisher (BUCK) and Will Compton (MIKE).

May didn’t see as much playing time as expected after suffering a shoulder stinger on special teams.

Compton said he felt a bit jittery leading up to this game. “But as the game got closer I seemed to calm down more, and once I got out there it was more of just keeping focus and not losing your composure at all and just knowing we’re a good defense.”

Compton said he thought he did fairly well, but noted improvements could be made and that “our defense can be tremendously better.”

Meyer gets the nod

Senior Derek Meyer got the start at left guard. It was uncertain who would start there given that junior Keith Williams had sat out three of four practices this week.

Meyer was joined on the starting offensive line by Mike Smith (left tackle), Jacob Hickman (center), Ricky Henry (right guard) and Marcel Jones (right tackle).

Nebraska did not rotate on the offensive line until the third quarter, when Andy Christensen spelled Meyer. Williams did not play but Bo Pelini suggested the injury wasn’t too serious after the game.

Defensive tackle Terrence Moore (turf toe) and Dreu Young (back) also didn’t play because of injuries.

Going away quotes

Florida Atlantic running back Alfred Morris had 85 yards on 18 carries. His impression of Nebraska? “They have a tough defensive line. Overall, it’s a great defense. We all did what we could.”

And Nebraska senior wide receiver Menelik Holt, who had a 28-yard touchdown catch to start the scoring, felt like the receivers showed a lot.

“I think we illustrated today that we can make some pretty big plays downfield,” Holt said.

This and that

Husker captains for the opener were Ndamukong Suh, Jacob Hickman, Matt O’Hanlon and Alex Henery. … Tight end Mike McNeill caught four passes for 51 yards. It is the fifth straight game he has had at least three catches. … Ndamukong Suh ended the night with six tackles and a pass breakup. … The three points allowed were the fewest the Huskers have given up since they allowed three to Kansas State in 2006. The margin of victory was the greatest since NU beat Troy 56-0 that same year.
