Some shuffling at linebacker

A couple notes from the Big 12 Conference coaches' teleconference:

--Backup cornerback Isaiah Fluellen did indeed suffer a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Husker coach Bill Callahan confirmed. "He had made a wonderful transition -- a quick transition -- to the defensive backfield," the coach said. "He was plugging in nicely."

--With backup middle linebacker Phillip Dillard out for the season (knee), junior Lance Brandenburgh will slide over to the middle from his strongside spot to back up starter Corey McKeon, Callahan said.

Meanwhile, sophomore Clayton Sievers will see increased action at strongside linebacker behind starter Stewart Bradley. Callahan indicated Sievers has been practicing there some.

Sievers is an interesting case. Against Louisiana Tech, he played in the Huskers' nickel package as a defensive end. On offense, he played tight end in short-yardage and goal-line situations.

--Callahan pointed out there's room for improvement, mentioning the four dropped passes, for instance.

--Yes, the o-line showed improvement in both run blocking and pass protection, he said.

However, "I come out of (Saturday's game) very tempered," he said. "I'm excited for the kids, but I know the conference is going to be the real challenging aspect of our schedule as we get deeper into it."

Exactly how I feel

Seivers was probally the last person that I pictured going both ways. But he has talent, and we need to get that talent on the field.
