Some thoughts on Culbert....

I don't know about the rest of you, but the positive buzz coming out of practice about Culbert is tough to ignore. With healthy backs at a premium, it may be hard moving this guy back to safety any time soon. His proficiency at the second and third levels is something I'm looking forward to seeing this fall. Let's not forget, this kid rushed for 2000 yards his senior year in high school in Los Angeles.

The more he practices and the less the other i-backs are available to play, it seems less likely that he will move back. Glenn better get healthy and stay healthy if Culbert is to move back.

He is a team player and dare I say the word role model / leader type player for being so unselfish.

Does anyone else think that he might be playing a little bit both ways? If he is going to be an I back most of the time maybe he could see some action in a dime set. IMO that would be kinda nice (especially if w cant keep our I backs healthy)

He may be doing fine in fact better than fine, but i do think that as good as a team player as he is, doesnt the university owe it to the player to get them on the field.

As good as he may be, he is not going to supplant Lucky. Lucky is going to have a monster year.

Therefor, if Culbert does well but isnt going to take the starting job (which he is not) then i think the school owes it to him to get him in a spot to see the field.

Going to next year, we brought in some quality running backs to play RUNNING BACK. If he doesnt win the job next year which is a very good possibility, since Lucky will probably be back, then i think we are being very unfair to this young man.

Just my 2 cents

It's not really a matter of supplanting Lucky, the fact is that Lucky is simply not an every down back who's going to pound the rock 30 times a game. Therefore you have to have a complimentary back that can go in when Lucky needs a break or when we need those tough yards on third and short that a back like Lucky isn't likely to get. Right now there are lingering doubts about Cody's health and its clear that though Mendoza has tons of talent he doesn't have enough of a grasp on the play book to be ready right now, therefore we have to have another option in there now just incase... what would we all be saying this fall if Cody can't go, Mendoza isn't ready and the staff hadn't prepared for the worst case scenario that would allow us to give Lucky a break? Would it be best if that option could come from a backup who wouldn't have Culbert's impact on defense, of course but apparently the coaches are more confident that other members of the team have a better chance of filling the defensive gap than someone else would have filling the running back one.

lucky is not an every down back because we as fans say so. Truly, it remains to be seen. I for one think he will be awesome getting the rock 25-30 times a game.

Throughout spring practice we have gotten many different reports on many different topics. There has been 1 count em 1 topic that hasnt changed yet has been brought up every day by players and coaches alike..................... and that is............................ "Marlon Lucky is doing great, playing well etc etc etc. Marlon has really stood out and Marlon had some phenomenal runs. It happens every day

Having Culbert there in case of emergency is great but to have him there solely without a chance to compete for a starting job is a crock. He committed to us as a school yet we are failing to hold up our end of the committment to him. I guarantee if he had known that in his sophomore year at school he would have no chance of starting due to the fact that the coaches werent going to give him one, then he would have gone somewhere else. We can all be pissed at David Ross, for his betrayal but i guess it is an accepted practice when our staff is doing it to a player.

JOKE

they probably did ask but do you really think the kid would say know. the problem is putting a kid in that spot. No player in his right mind is going to say NO.

Was Ross wrong for backing out on us?

Is cally wrong for not giving a kid a chance to play?

landon, what the hell are you smoking dude? the university doesn't owe ANY PLAYER, ANYTHING! Culbert is being used as a backup, period. They have to get him ready to go, Glenn may not be able to contribute much at all and the new guys are, "just new". You don't go half cocked with a back and a half entering into the fall season, you got to prepare.

What the hell would we do if Lucky went down with an injury?? Lucky will not have a monster year IMO and he has durability issues as well, as shown last season. Cally knows he better have at least 3 guys who can run the ball and understand the offensive schemes and he is trying to get them ready now.

early reports say that he might move to LB next year since it will be big need and he continues to gain weight, depending on who develops and RB

The key to this argument is how well will Castille fit into the mix and how SOON !! IMO, if Castille comes in and is ready to see action as a "capable back-up" in emergency situations (Lucky-Glenn) both down with injury....then I see Culbert back on defense this fall..... Just because they move him back to D in the fall, doesn't mean that he can't make an emergency switch to RB if necessary....

IMO, the coaches are developing a great ATHLETE into a "multi-position" player, that they can move around to fill voids in emergency situations.... He will go back to D if Castille proves he can play......

asking an awful lot from Castille right away, by mid season maybe, but as we all know learning this offense is not for the meek......
