Sporting News' 2014 Projections

Branno

All-Conference
They have Nebraska:

Winning the West

Playing LSU in the Capital One Bowl

Ranked 17

Ameer as 2nd team all American and top 10 for Heisman

Gregory first team all American

Biggest question marks are pretty much what we've discussed ad naseum, QB, new OL, and secondary.

Overall not too shabby, although I'd love to see our team surprise em.

That's kinda my expectation for the year. Win the West then we will see what happens.

Husker fans get accused of over-zealous expectations, but it's pretty hard to look at all the pieces and not expect us to be better than last year.

Right?

Not bad and not far from my expectations. I do like our team better than Iowa and Wisconsin, our two main challengers this year. The schedule (going on the road to both) does us no favors, though. I won't say surprised, but I will be very pleased if we win the West this year.

I would love to play LSU in any bowl! Hopefully its in the playoff system

Unfortunately for the divide in Bo-haters and Bo-lievers this could still end up with a 10-4 season. Regular season 10-2, lose conference title and bowl game. If that's the case, hopefully it doesn't include any blowouts. If it doesn't then I would consider this a success and a building block to 2015.

I'd rather see an 11 or 12 win season to show definite improvement.

It is never as simple as a number in a column. Let's say we go 10-2 in the season, grind out a close loss in the CCG and a close loss against LSU, is that a failure? Be honest.

I'm an eternal optimist because of 31 years of being a Cubs fan. Even taking that into consideration I don't see a definite loss on our schedule and that includes the possible CCG. Will there be losses? Probably. But sheer number of wins and losses doesn't really show what direction a team is headed in.

Mizzou went 5-7 and then the next season was a win away from playing in the MNC. This game is crazy.

Yes, the scenario you described would be a failure.

I would be fine with that scenario. No blowouts and a close loss in the conf champ and to LSU. That's real progress. But the Bo-haters will point to the constant of the Pelini era, 4 losses. I'm saying more that a 10-4 season wouldn't move Husker nation off the deadlock we are in. We really need 12 wins or 6 losses.

Somewhat off topic but I believe there are a lot of similarities between NU '14 and MU '13. The injuries from the year before are a big reason. Guess we will see.

In that case every year we dont win a conference title is a failure.

Well to that I would say welcome to the University of Nebraska.

That's not something that was created here. It's a benchmark created both by past history and out of the mouths of the staff. Hell, I would be more concerned if their yearly goals -didn't- include that.

The problem hasn't been the goal, it's the reaction after the goal isn't met. The "I don't apologize for nine wins", and what have you. The losses on those stage should eat at the staff and the players. Serve as fuel to do better next year.

There are times when it doesn't feel like that's present.

They've got the talking part down to a science. It's results time.
