Staff told the truth, I just didn't listen

So looking back over the fall practices, the staff said exactly where we were and how we looked. I drank too much kook-aid and made excuses for the statements.

When Riley made the comment after one practice that "it sometimes looked like football" he meant it. Evidenced by the errant throws and 14 penalties.......

When Riley said the D has given up too many big plays he meant it. Initially I was worried, but the kook-aid was strong and I reasoned that TA was that much improved he lit our D up..... What Riley was saying was that our DB's, on an Island, needed improving.

When Riley said our run game needed to be more consistent he meant it. Again, I thought it meant our DL was that dominant...... It really meant what he "said". Our OL needs some serious work in order to block and get our backs open. Hence the screens and sweeps...

When TA, Ganz and beat writers talked about the large amount of passing in practice, I bought into "we were working on an area of weakness". What it really was is that we are are going to pass. A Lot.

When Langs told TA he wouldn't be a RB who threw the ball, the kook-aid made me believe and "improved QB" who would run. Nope. Langs meant you won't be running as much....

These are just a few. Doesn't change yesterday, but at least with the band-aid ripped off it is what it is. BYU was good, but not that good or even borderline great. NU is just average right now. At least for the system that Riley and Co want.

In practice we had issues with big plays, no OL push, pass first, penalties etc..... Riley is too professional to say this. It was alluded to, but I didn't listen.......

There will be more growing pains and bumps than I expected. I didn't want to believe that this year would again see us struggle in so many areas. Injuries will really hurt now.

On a positive, the tackling was much better. Staff was calm. Kids were calm and I don't see us regressing next week......

First game, new staff, new systems. People, myself included, have tried to explain there would be bumps in the road, many choose to ignore that too. Losing that home opener streak is a bummer, but its not everyday Nebraska opens them season against a solid team like BYU.

The offensive line has been an issue for a long time. Going back into previous years. The coaches said running the ball was a struggle. They weren't lying. Still, I thought the second half had some bright spots to build on. We were definitely improving in that second half. Just didn't convert a few third downs we really needed.

Missing FG's killed us.

I expected a bit more domination from our defensive line.

Tackling was much better as you said.

Dedrick Young is a phenom.

Westerkamp is good ole reliable. We are really lucky to have him. We would be hurting big time if we didn't.

That pass play to Trey Foster form the TD was one of my favorite plays of the day. I loved how that play sets up. BYU was lost. Foster executed it brilliantly.

Tommy looked like the QB I know he is capable of being. Did have a rough stretch though.

Just a few of my takeaways.

I was encouraged by the first quarter. We moved the ball pretty well. Tommy was throwing the ball and hitting receivers. The 2nd quarter was pretty much a disaster. Our O line showed it's inexperience and Tommy was hurried too often. Last year Ameer could overcome some of the poor blocking and did quite often. This year we certainly don't have any back close to Ameer although Wilbon showed flashes and Newby could gain yards sometimes if a hole was created.

In the 3rd quarter I thought the coaches did well making adjustments. The play calling put our players in better positions. Tackling improved. BYU still had too many big plays and many of them were QB runs for 20-40 yards. Not sure how much of it was their great QB and how much was us getting blocked out of our lane. Probably a bit of both.

We have work to do. I think the O line gets better with more experience. They need to or it will get ugly in a few games. Time to swear off the Kool Aid and face reality. We are an 8-4 or 7-5 team this year.
