DESTIN, Fla. -- Steve Spurrier has a plan to pay football players -- and it wouldn't cost schools or conferences a dime.
South Carolina's head ball coach offered an interesting yet far-from-feasible proposal Wednesday that would give 70 players a $300 stipend every game.

Spurrier acknowledged that the plan probably won't get very far at the Southeastern Conference's annual meetings or in the NCAA realm, but it could open the door for future dialogue on the issue of sharing millions in college football revenue with the guys who really make it happen.

As good as Spurrier's intentions are, this proposal is far too adolescent to be considered serious. The Title IX implications are a huge deal and $300, sorry to say, isn't enough to stop many players from going that extra distance to make cash on the side.

But, perhaps this gets the moss-covered rock rolling to some degree. But at the end of the day I just find it tough to believe these guys are going to get game stipends. Scholarship increases? Maybe.

Didn't read the link and probably discussed: But how would that be fair when football is 13 games and baseball/basketball is way more. Plus what about swimming and gym? Can't give football one thing and nothing or something different to other sports.

Note to Steve Spurrier: Your SEC brethren have already adopted payment schemes for their players.

paying football players will never happen, because if you do, you would have to pay all college athletic,s in all sports,,,,will never happen

What you both said is arguably the biggest issue here. It's tough to justify paying one group and not the other. Furthermore, sports like baseball and basketball put in more hours every week especially baseball because games don't have a set time limit. They're done when they're done.
