Lincoln, NE -- Driving on snow this winter might smell a bit sweeter.

That's because a de-icing product made from sugar beet-based molasses is being touted as a noncorrosive alternative to winter road salt.

Galen Kauzlarich sells the product to Nebraska customers from Knoxville, Iowa.

To make the molasses, his company uses sugar beets from Western Sugar Co. in Scottsbluff. The product is manufactured by Grain Processing Corp., based in Iowa. The company also a de-icer that uses corn-based ingredients.

Corn byproducts have a history as a de-icing option. Road crews tend to use them only on new, uncured concrete or when temperatures get so low that salt doesn't work well.

Kauzlarich said the new product will make bridges, roadways and equipment last longer.
