Tale of the tape: BYU

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
Before we dive into a breakdown of three key plays from Saturday’s loss to BYU (you can probably guess which play the third breakdown will cover), a few notes from Coach:

  • He is high on redshirt freshman defensive end Freedom Akinmoladun and said he needed to play more, even before we learned that Jack Gangwish would miss some time. Greg McMullen has his strengths, but the difference between his first step and Akinmoladun’s is stark.
  • Coach feels strongly that Josh Kalu is better off at nickelback rather than playing outside. Though Kalu made a few nice plays and showed his talent, Coach pointed out repeated mistakes in his technique, and his footwork in particular.
  • Maliek Collins is good at football (not that you need to be a coach to see this one).
Now, onto the breakdown.

I love these.

Goes back to being "football smart" and effort. The play with Westy, hell our own guys gave up and kind of watched.... Williams on the hail mary.......

Effort and motor. SUH was and is a freak. A once in a generation player. BUT he also had a motor that didn't quit. Whistle to whistle, side line to side line.

At least a real game is now on film. I expect to see improvement moving forward....

Happens all the time, and I point it out ALL THE TIME. Going back years now.......

It has to stop. It's the difference between a Champion, and just another 4 loss team. You play til' the whistle blows, and you seek contact at all times. Anybody on the opposing team you can put a hit on, is one less guy they've got facilitating the play. Both sides of the ball, but especially the offensive line. Far too much standing around and spectating. Spectating is the fans job.

It's the killer instinct we've lacked for 15 years.

The breakdown of the hail mary defense is... not good.
Just watch ESPN film room break it down.

Basically every one of our guys did the wrong thing. I puked a little.
Let's not get carried away with the "every guy" comments.

Maliek performed perfectly

Agree 100%. Friggin hit some one. Even if your on the opposite side of the field. Get that swagger going again that if you are on the field with the Huskers, your head better be on a swivel....

Too much fancy crap and smoke/mirrors. Not being able to pick up one measly first down and win the game (twice) was disappointing.

Link? I'd like to keep reliving this and throw up a little too.
It was on TV. I literally walked in the door from work, turned on the TV and there was Mike Belotti. He drew out the play and went through everything breaking it down. Most we already knew.
On the line, the right defender does a spin move inside. That allowed Mangum to roll to the right and buy time for the receiver on the left to run across and down field and get to the goal line. One guy on him and only one other from the back of the endzone go in to stop him from making catch with none of them in front. With nobody in front of the receiver the ball falls right to him since h3 is the tallest guy, he easily makes the grab. Meanwhile there are 4 guys still in the back of the endzone protecting two receivers who had no shot at the catch.

One note on the hail mary. I'm 95% sure that Mangum was aiming for the receivers in the back of the endzone. Most hail marys throw to the bunch then you have a trailer wr (or even a guy behind the bunch) there for the tip/catch.

Look at Nebraska's design in the NW game, they have Westerkamp behind the bunch, and Moore (???) in front of the bunch. BYU only sent out 3 wrs, so there was no one in behind the play for the tip.

But given Mangum was throwing into a 20 mph wind, the ball only made it to Matthews in front. So having our guys bunched up with the recievers in the back and then having Gerry/Gifford between the bunch and Matthews seems like the correct play to me. The main problem was Williams not staying with Matthews giving him a damn good chance of catching the ball.

So in short, the 20 mph wind plus Williams watching the play cause the problem (not to mention Gangwish diving inside for no reason).

I think if I had to do this again, I would have Bando chuck their slot WR, then have him take off the for QB from the outside. Chances are that Mangum is going to try to roll to the right to buy time as that was where the 2 WRs were. A delayed blitz would have caused real problems for BYU.

Mangum even said as much. He said he threw short, no doubt due to the wind.
Unfortunately that was a blessing in disguise for him. Our guys waaaaay in the back never adjusted. Kinda felt like they thought the other guy would adjust so they stayed. If two of them bum rush the front of the goal as he makes catch, they could have forced him back across the goal. Heindsight and all though.

To me, I'm still upset we called time out. The clock is at :01. They had to have a play ready to go, all their guys had to be ready for it. I doubt they were. They would have been franticly running around out of position. Instead we called it and let them all get into position and it payed off huge. I'm also upset we only sent 3 at the QB. I agree, some pressure and that never happens. If he already threw it short due to the wind, imagine what two guys barreling down on Mangum cause. Ball probably falls 10 yards short of the goal, and with 6 guys in the endzone even if someone makes the grab theres no way they get in.

It's frustrating as hell to think about that stuff PLUS the fact we gave them 20+ seconds by snapping too early before we gave it back. AND the fact we left 6 points out there due to missed FG's.

In the end, we played a tough game and so did BYU. We expected growing pains and we saw them. Now that we have played an actual game we can fix it this week and get prepared for Miami next weekend.
