Callahan's future at NU is on hold

BY RICH KAIPUST

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

It's going to be difficult to get somebody to come to Nebraska when you're going to get chopped up by the papers and chopped up by the fans," said Cook, whose name is on the Cook Pavilion, the football team's indoor practice facility before the Hawks Center opened. "I'm not saying what the right thing to do is, but if you pull the plug on people, you better know where you're going. Who wants to come to Nebraska? Who's going to really embrace the program? It's a high-percentage risk for somebody to take the job."

Mr. Cook is throwing a temper tantrum because his friend got canned. He is absolutely embarassing himself as far as I'm concerned. Please Mr. Cook don't go away, mad, but please just go away.

Does anyone know - was he one of the boosters that called for Solich's firing? If he is, he is the biggest reason it would have been tough to get a coach -go basically 10-3 and get canned - why would anyone want to coach in that type of situation.

I think if skersfan sees your post he'll let you have it.

Mr. Cook has donated millions of dollars to the University. Not just athletics, but to the students. The Cook Pavilion when built and still is looked at by many schools as the template for student recreation centers. He has given countless donations. He had the NU in his will, geared to recieve millions in gifts. He could have very easily given these gifts to someone else or group.

My point, is to show a little damn respect to a man that has given more than just a donation for his season tickets. He's 72 and donated his life to NU. Very few of us have done this. Plus, he makes a honest point. Without him, he have no great weight room or student center. Which means lower enrollment, fewer great athletes, less $...less success period.

I agree, it's bad news when someone like this pulls the plug on NU. After yesterday's events, all I could think to myself was, "we just became Alabama." I hope Mr. Cook reconsiders and is impressed with the new AD(whoever that may be).

Completey agree with you that without Mr. Cook we may not be where we are at today, and that he has done, in the past, a lot of great things for the University Athletics Department. There is absolutely no denying that in any way shape or form.

However, what is very upsetting to me, and what was suppose to be the point of the thread, is that he is upset with the University for firing his friend and he has decided to trash the University in the papers. Why not just tell the papers that he has no comment to the current situation, and take it up with the University itself. He is trying to be "bigger than himself" right now by not only taking away his money but he also wants the world to know that he is not going to support the University anymore. It is his right to do so; however, I would prefer (and yes, I am nobody so it doesn't matter what I want) for him to say no comment to the papers or for the papers to quit interviewing him so that it this period is not more difficult than it is going to be already.

I don't think we're saying he hasn't done great things for the University...but the University can't make everyone happy. It IS a donation. Last I looked donations are given on goodwill and not on "I'm giving you money so that you do what I tell you to do." You don't like what the University is doing, fine...pull your money. But don't then go and complain to the press saying "they won't get a single dime more because they fired my friend."

The University is still a fine University. The root of the University is still it's students and it's sad he feels like he has to deny the students better opportunities because of management decisions. There is more to NU than just athletics. It's like saying I don't agree with who is running the March of Dimes so children born prematurely won't be getting my support anymore (of course that's an extreme example)

I'm sure he could have made a better statement by doing something other than just entirely pulling out. I'm sure he could have said "my money is not going to go to athletics" or something similar.

This is why I really believe TO NEEDS to come back. He needs to smooth the waters. Cook gave alot of money when TO was coach, so maybe if TO is AD, Cook will decide that maybe things will be ok. Solich wasn't fired just because of his coaching, there were several other issues, like how he treated his players, and his extra curricular activities with his asst. So there were alot of bounderies crossed by Solich. But that was how many years ago. Time to let the Solich thing go. Alot of people thought it was ok to fire him and alot didn't. Doesn't matter it's done. Pedersen is done. Doesn't matter anymore. We have to move on. We have to retain our current supporters and get some more if we want to keep one of the best facilites and colleges around. You don't get an excellent medical research facility by standing and looking at it, someone has to give the money. Cook is upset because his friend got let go, fan were upset because Pedersen and Callahan were here. Were the fans quiet, ummm NO, so why should Cook be quiet.

Fans (at least me) were not interviewed in the paper and did not basically say that any future coach/AD taking a job here is taking a huge risk.

Cook not pleased about Pederson's firing

BY BRIAN CHRISTOPHERSON / Lincoln Journal Star

Monday, Oct 15, 2007 - 04:09:19 pm CDT

Well, here’s one big donor who isn’t happy about the ax given to Steve Pederson. Dan Cook said the University of Nebraska-Lincoln isn’t going to get another cent from him.

The 72-year-old’s family name adorns the Cook Pavilion practice field on campus.

When he heard Pederson was dismissed on Monday by Chancellor Harvey Perlman, it infuriated him.

“I know 99 percent of people are just elated,” Cook said. “I wish Nebraska nothing but the best. But they ain’t going to have me around. If they want to take my name off the building or take my plaque down, I don’t give a rat’s a$$. I could care less. I don’t have time to go through the misery of people who make dumb mistakes.”

Cook said on Sunday that he felt both Pederson and Husker coach Bill Callahan should be given at least one more year to see what they can do.

He said he’d still come to games, but the Huskers are off the will.

“I hope they find new donor,” Cook said. “They’re going to need to find a new donor. I’m off the roster. Somebody asked me what it’d take to drive me away? I said, ‘I don’t know.’ Well, I just found out what it took to drive me away.”
I mean honestly what can he expect? The fans wanted changes, most the boosters wanted changes, and apparently Steve Pederson had issues dealing with other people. As his own words said, 99% of the people are elated about this, so we shouldn't have done it because there is 1% opposed to it? To me his comments just seem classless and he is ruining his own name not the University's.

But ultimately, shouldn't our "Evil Plan" include getting Cook to support the University again?

Nice comments from the cheap seats.

I've been frustrated enough during Pedeys tenure to make me not go to any games since I moved out here.

(Actually it was because we lost 4 of the last 5 games I saw in person and I was getting superstitious).

But still..You could say I stopped contributing because I wasn't getting my way.

Boy, this is such easy fodder I don't even know where to begin. I guess we could all take one poster's method and say why does Cook matter more than me because I'm a potential donor some day? I still laugh about that one. It's a numbers game here people. You make one booster pissed, but you please several others who will give more than the one that's pissed. It's called basic economics + politics! In terms of skersfan, I'm pretty sure he's in hiding right now. I wouldn't worry too much about getting ripped by him. The Regents and boosters got Solich fired, and now they're doing it again. As far as I'm concerned, the only real thing being accomplished is they're cleaning up the mess they started to begin with.

It may be a high risk job as far as getting fired goes but it is worth the risk and lets face it, the people who get interveiwed for the job are not broke. I mean BC is not going to live in a box.If I get fired I will live in a box, if BC gets fired he goes on vacation.

skersfan doesn't have any hidden agenda. He only tells it like he sees it. He's upfront on where he stands and doesn't waffle or crawfish to anyone. Since I know him as a person and not just another poster on the board is why I post this. He has been a gracious host at the USc tailgate in LA and made everyone welcome. Everyone.

Any plan should include getting all Husker backers on board. And yes, the big boosters are the most important because they contribute the most. It is just a fact.
