Ten Things We Learned From Bowl Season

Sit back, close your eyes and just savor this for a moment...........we've been waiting basically a decade to be relevant again. Isn't it far nicer to ponder things like whether Crick will equal or surpass Suh versus something like "where in the heck are we going to get competent defenders and a DC so we don't get tossed for 50, 60 or 70 points again?" We've come a long way baby. Yeah, there's road left, but we're burning up the miles.

With all this media attention will come even more talented recruits, which our coaches should hopefully turn into even more success. All we've had to listen to for the past years is how weak and pathetic and unworthy we were to be in the same conference as OU and UT. Now it looks like we might be the highest ranked B12 team going into the season next year. My my.....times are changing. Enjoy it! :cheers
Yes, you're quite right. NU being the highest ranked BigXII team to start next year......oh yeah. My goodness, last spring the last vicious smashmouth NU teams like 1999 & 2001 seemed like 10,000 years ago.

Time to relax, sip on a cold one and just cruise with the warm satisfaction of seeing the BigRedMachine rise like the phoenix from the ashes.....

You dont just switch a player to another position and expect him to pick up like high school...with Baker being a soph next year they should just let him be a three year starter

Let him? Nah make him earn it. In fact, make crick earn his starting spot. I like players hungry and competitive week in and week out. No position on the team should be safe for next year. Make everyone who starts earn their spot this winter, spring, summer, and fall. If they aren't pulling their weight demote them IE: Phillip Dillard, best coaching decision of the year.

Absolutely! Great post, Paul. :thumbs

The real question is if Crick can keep up the production without Suh next him. He took up a lot of pressure off Crick.
I don't know. After the Baylor game, I think a lot of the teams left on our schedule took notice of Crick and schemed their O-line to take him into account as well. I think Crick is gonna be just as good as Suh.

I have heard some people say Crick has the same tools as Suh, just needs seasoning. Crick is a great player and if Baker is a quick learner i think our D-line not only doesnt take a step back, they take a step FORWARD!

I ripped on O'Hanlon all year but he has been solid the last few weeks.

GBR
rumor is baker switches to OT and meredith moves to DT. therefore Ankrah starts at DE
There isn't any basis for this rumor. The coaches gave baker the option of playing offensive or defensive line. He chose to play on the d-line. He has played at that position for two years, and will be the starter this year. Why would he switch now? He would be learning a completely different position. Besides the fact that we have depth at the o-line now, and he would be 5 steps behind on the learning curve compared to players in his class.

Meredith is settling in very nicely at the d-end spot. Expect He, Pierre Allen, and Ankrah to all contribute this year. This kind of depth is a wonderful thing and does not necessitate position changes.
i dont agree, i have been hearing the same thing from people that are associated closely with the program. word is that baker isnt where they want him to be on dline but he does great when he lines up on the offensive side of the ball.

just what ive been hearing for about 2 months now, so take it for what its worth...

I would say that Crick is probably gonna reach Suh's level. I dont think he will out shine Suh.
We may never have another DT that can drop into Middle Linebacker coverage (and play it well) like Suh can. But we will have DTs that can definately make plays like Crick. He showed this year that he can shed a one on one block and make a play as well as anyone in the nation.

In obvious running downs next year, is there a possibility of moving Crick to End and having Steinkuhler and Moore or whoever take up the middle? I'm just saying that Crick can move like an end with his size. Maybe it gives us better run stopping power (not that we needed much this year).

Keep Crick at DT. Our depth at DT isnt as good as our depth at DE.

Linebackers will be better next year. Compton and Fisher will get better, they did pretty good for it being their first year seeing the field.

I think its safe to say Crick sophomore season was like seeing Suh in his junior season.
I would be surprised if the linebackers are better next year. Dillard played some outstanding football this year and I will be somewhat surprised if one of the young guys can look as impressive as he did. (I think Suh having the year that he did somewhat overshadowed an outstanding year for Dillard.)

Also, I'll be very, very surprised if I ever see a Nebraska DT play at Suh's level. The guy was simply one of the best players in Nebraska history. Those guys are never plug and play with replacements.

I think the koolaid might be flowing a bit too much.

I understand what you're saying and it's valid. But I'm willing to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt on this one. Granted I don't expect anyone to fill Big Suh's shoes, but perhaps our depth at D will make up for it in other ways? It'll be interesting to see how this develops.

I don't think Crick has the feet SUH has, but SUH said Crick is really starting to think on that "second" level, which is being more than just covering a gap, it is causing absolute hell from the DT position. I hope we become like Penn State w/ their linebackers, but NU to DT's, even better--every position = ]]]]]]]

Very true.. Time to enjoy..

i don't think Crick could be better than SUH, but i do think Crick was better as a sophomore than SUH was when he was a sophomore.
I think that this is relative. While both are doing well in the NFL as practice players neither Zach Potter nor Ty Steinkuhler were as dominant next to Suh his SO year. I think that has to be considered. Crick is not as athletic as Suh. Suh's combination of speed agility and strength is what makes him unstoppable. Guys like that you try to cut (as in cut block) and that still didn't work.

Crick is a great player and could make some All American teams next season, but no one is as talented as Suh -- he is a freak! But we still could have defensive tackles next season that are comparable to what we had with the NC teams of the '90s.
