Texas A&M begins coaching search after Mark Turgeon's departure
Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne is becoming quite good at identifying and landing quality basketball coaches. Perhaps it's because he's had a lot of practice.
In the wake of Mark Turgeon's decision to take the Maryland job, Byrne is starting on his third coaching search in seven years. His first two picks -- Billy Gillispie and Turgeon -- were instantly and wildly successful. Gillispie took over a 7-21 team in 2004 and then went 70-26 in three seasons (two NCAA Tournaments) before leaving for Kentucky. Turgeon was 97-40 (four NCAAs) in his four-season stay in College Station, Texas.
"We always keep a list. We always know some people that we think will work well with us here, so we'll start that process again."
The Houston Chronicle reports that
Nebraska’s Doc Sadler, Marquette’s Buzz Williams, Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and Colorado’s Tad Boyl are at the top of Byrne's wish list. The Dallas Morning News also reports that UTEP coach Tim Floyd and ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla are on the list.
