A&M expected to name Mike Sherman head coach today

Houston Texans assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Sherman will be named the new Texas A&M head football coach, according to a source at the university.
Texas A&M has called for a news conference at 11 a.m. today regarding the football program.
He will replace Dennis Franchione, who resigned on Friday after the Aggies 38-30 victory over Texas.
When asked if he was the front-runner for the position following the Texans' 27-17 loss to Cleveland on Sunday, Sherman declined to comment.
Sherman has strong ties to Texas A&M with two stints as an assistant coach with the Aggies, serving as the offensive line coach from 1989-93 and 1995-96 under former coach R.C. Slocum.
After leaving Texas A&M in 1996, he went to the NFL as an assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers. In 2000, he was named the head coach of the Packers, a position he held for six years, posting a winning record in five of his six seasons. Overall, he was 57-39 as the coach of the Packers.
Green Bay went to the playoffs four times under Sherman winning the division three straight years from 2002-04. The Packers were 2-4 in the playoffs under Sherman and never advanced to the NFC championship game.
He was fired after his sixth season, when the Packers went 4-12.
The Packers always had an explosive offense under Sherman. In 2004, Green Bay set a franchise record with 6,357 total net yards and 4,449 net passing yards.
Sherman was hired by Texans' head coach Gary Kubiak, a former Texas A&M quarterback, to be an assistant head coach/offense in 2006 and was named the offensive coordinator in January.
The Texans (5-6) have shown great improvement under Sherman and went into Sunday's game with the eighth-ranked offense in the NFL.
Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, another former Texas A&M assistant, was also a candidate to replace Franchione, according to a source.
But according to the Birmingham News, Tuberville was informed on Sunday that Texas A&M elected to go in another direction.
Sherman will take over a program that has struggled in five seasons under Franchione. The Aggies were 32-28 under the former coach and 3-12 against rivals Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
Still, the Aggies (7-5) are bowl-eligible and will find out their destination Sunday.
