It's no secret that Nebraska isn't living up to the expectations that the fans have set for them. A loss to UCLA, while not good, wasn't exactly a shocking result. A loss to Minnesota, on the other hand, was very shocking and very sobering to those of us who thought the defense and offense were beginning to turn the corner.

So who's to blame? Is it the coaches, the players, or a combination of both?

It's the job of the coaches to put players in positions to succeed. Thus, the blame for the failings of the players should be on the coaches, right? I don't think that's a fair assessment to make. That takes too much responsibility off the shoulders of the players. If it's on the shoulders of the coaches to make their players look good, shouldn't it be on the shoulders of the players to make their coaches look good? Why can't this relationship be a two-way street?

For example, we don't know what the offensive or defensive play call was. All we know is how the play turned out. What if Beck called a run play and Taylor made an audible to a pass play and then the pass is intercepted or incomplete. Can we really place that failure on Beck? No, I don't think we should. Or if Bo called a blitz, but the LBs couldn't get through the offensive line, is that the fault of the coach for trying to place his players in a position to be successful? Or is it the fault of the LBs who couldn't get through the offensive line?

But, to contradict what I have said to this point (because my goal isn't to shift blame from one group to another, my goal is to better examine some of the factors which should influence blame), if a player isn't succeeding despite the play call, it is up to the coaches to make the necessary change. Then if nobody is succeeding, then it is up to the coaches to recruit players who can succeed.

So, there's only so much coaches can do, so they can't be blamed outright.

What's your opinion on this, and why do you have this opinion?

Where's the option for "myself"...I point the thumb. My work schedule interferes with gameday and kills the kharma....

It's gotta be at least majority coaching, but I also didn't see much fire and passion out of the players that should be there automatically - especially coming off of a bye week.

So 75% coaching, 25% players

I thought it was majority coaches, but I had to put some on the players because of stuff like Martinez telling the coaches he was ready to go.

I had to go 100% coaches. I simply cannot, will not, blame these players until Bo & Co. give them a chance to succeed. I could name off the laundry list again but it is getting tiresome. Just look at the coaching job we put out Saturday. Two weeks to prepare and get these kids motivated to play, and look what we got instead. Sorry, I can't blame 18-20 year old kids when they are being so severely handicapped by decisions and adjustments this staff fails to make correctly.

Player accountability would be nice to see Mike Rose even said as much.

But for the record I completely blame the Mayans, man bear pig, solar flaring and husker99

I blame the coaches till they put down the Coaching Div 1 football for dummy's book down. Its their job to put an effective game plan together that their talent/experience level of players can execute. No reason for Poopchips to still have a job or be on the sidelines, he should have been gone last season.

If a player does something wrong, it's up to the coaches to correct him, sit him, prepare him, motivate him, replace him, etc. The players cannot do the same thing to an underperforming coach.

Sometimes even the best prepared, best coached players make mistakes that may cost the team a game, or perhaps another team is just a little better despite the best efforts of the coaches and players. But that's not what we are seeing here. Every problem that we see with the Huskers these days, be it the team's culture, psyche, discipline, fundamentals, and personnel decisions, falls on the coaches.

Just for the record, I wasnt exactly shocked by the loss to Minnesota. Dissappointed, yes. But shocked-absolutely not. It was time for a drop in the roller coaster.

The only thing that would shock me anymore would be if this team came out with a game plan, at least half way executed it, made one sensible in game adjustment, and played for more than 3 quarters. I'm quite sure that would generate the need for a call to the paramedics and the use of that AED difibulator thingamajig.
