The Defense

Hearing some people scoffing at our defensive performance and Bo's comments that we could be better, I did a little statistical comparison for the first 3 games. What I found was shocking to say the least.

In almost every measure except PPG and Rushing Defense, we are better or equal to our 2009 D through 3 games. In fact, our run D is only slightly worse than last year, and our passing D is significantly better than last year at this point, despite having faced 2 potential NFL caliber quarterbacks in Enderle and Locker.

The D is impressive. What I have found to be encouraging with Bo and Carl is their ability to adapt to what foes are doing. Washington had some success in the run game early in the contest, but as the game wore on, that success seemed to disapear and, at the same time, our pass D got tougher. Washington's early plan found little success later in the game and when they scored to get to 21, that drive seemed like a total fluke. Usually, if a team did that to us, I would be worried, but the Husker D was so steady that I immediately thought, Ok, let's see you do that again. And they didn't!!!

 
They are playing at a high level early, which is good, and every D Bo has coached at Nebraska has gotten better as the season went along. Our Rush D is far too quick to give up the big play, which makes you a little nervous for teams like KState and Okie Lite. But all in all I expect Martin and David to be fully ready two weeks from now. They've been doing their jobs to this point and have a lot of upside we haven't seen yet.

 
Our scoring defense won't be as good this year due to a few misqueues in the first few games.

However, a few of those points came from bonehead mistakes on offense during the Idaho and Washington games (coughing the ball up within the 10 yard line)

Our pass defense looks more stout, but our run defense needs a little shoring up... A lot of that has to due with inexperience linebackers.

Adjustments during a game....what a novel idea! Sounds like something we would have done in the 90's. :-)

 
The adjustment were made so fast. And i dont think that Bo ever said this D will be 5 times better, but rather they could be 5 times better, as in when they start playing to their peak (which last years D was pretty much the Oklahoma game on) they could be 5 times better.
