Four is way too high for the kind of offense we showed last year.

And who is "the Gold Sheet?" I've never heard of this ranking.

Four? I think thats a bit too high for us.

4 is too high until we get a QB/WR core we can trust in big games.

Why can't you have it both ways? Preseason rankings are largely irrelevant and based on popularity and guesswork rather than actual fact. They aren't worth the paper they're printed on, and we can all think of teams that were ranked highly in the preseason, only to fall ingloriously when actual play started. So that's a fair statement.

Having said that, one can also look at the kind of team that is traditionally ranked in the top five and see that they have both an effective offense and defense, and usually pretty good special teams. The Huskers should be pretty solid on special teams and we can make an educated guess that we'll be pretty good on defense based on Bo's track record and the guys coming back, but we have largely the same offense we had last year and until they prove otherwise, there isn't much reason to expect them to be one of the top offenses in the nation - certainly not the kind of offense that warrants a #4 national ranking.

While nobody in this thread said "preseason rankings mean nothing," it's not unfair and it's not untrue. You can have it both ways.

While you guys bickere and argue over us being at 4, I'm dumbfounded they have Arkansas and Cincinnati ranked at 12 & 13. Boise State at 1 is a feel good story, but it will never happen. It would almost take an act of God for them to even get into the NC game.

I used to use this when I used to gamble on college football. A lot of gamblers use it. It has stats like NU is 10-1 against (Iowa State and the spread) when they are favored by more than 7. Or NU is 5-1 against the spread when they play in Sept. They don't care who wins and they don't tout a favorite team, it is all about winning the bet. If you read what they wrote about NU, it is nothing we don't all know but when they throw stats at you about historial data then it becomes relavent. Problem with that is when a new coach comes in and changes the program, the historical data may or may not be important.

I love the preseason rankings. It cause a huge stuhr and moaning and groaning from fans about other teams saying "well they don't deserve that, we do blah blah blah..." Its a fun time right before the season starts too, a lot of trash talking. I just like to read it though, i dont like to provoke people though.

I think this is clearly a poll thats trying to predict the end of season rankings. (NO way is Boise the best team in the country.) I could see NU ending up at #4, and unfortunately, based on their schedule, I could see Boise winning their second game of the season for the national title.
