The "I'll be happy if..." Thread

Five-Star Recruit
Although not quite the regular season as far as excitement goes, the next 3 months is a fun time for Nebraska football. There are 3 major things happening with various moving parts to each and I'm curious what everyone's threshold for expectations is for each. What result or outcome in the following 3 categories will you be satisfied with?

1) Coaching Changes

2) Bowl Game

3) Recruiting Class

Recruiting: Finish Strong

Coaching Situation: Unknown at this point

Bowl Game: Tough game that could go either way, two solid football teams.

I'll be happy with the following and disappointed with pretty much anything else.

Coaching Changes

I want Stoops and Gill and I want Cotton gone. I'll be pretty disappointment with much of anything less. I think this is a rare year to have those 2 high caliber coaches sitting out there unemployed with in-roads into the program and now is the perfect opportunity to get them.

I don't think Bo's going to have a chance at getting someone on a Stoops level unless it's someone who he as a relationship with like Stoops and there just aren't that many of those out there. This is a unique opportunity to have a shot at someone of his caliber and realistically be able to get him because of their relationship and I don't see that coming along every day. I guess if he hires someone else on Stoops' level I'll be happy too, but I don't see it happening because most of them aren't going to be willing to come work for an unproven head coach.

With Gill, we may not find him at this low of a point in his career again and now is the time to find a place for him on our staff. A couple years ago, he was one of the hot head coaching prospects in the country. Now he's probably not on many people's radar for much more than a coordinator or maybe head coach at a much lower tier school. Either way, he will have to take a step backward in his career. It happens and it doesn't make him a bad coach. If he has to take a step backward in his career anyway, I'd prefer it's with Nebraska.

Cotton just needs to go...never should have been hired in the first place. He hasn't ever shown anything that makes me believe he's a top level coach at any position. He's a Nebraska guy and I think he's probably a really good dude...he just needs to be moved into the administrative office. He's not getting it done on the field and never really was.

Bowl Game

I'll be happy with a competitive game. I don't really expect to win this game...I really hope we just don't get blown out on national television. I think even the middle of the SEC is huge strides ahead of where Nebraska is right now. If we pull off a W, that's gravy but please just don't pull a Wisconsin or Michigan again.

Recruiting Class

I'll be happy with a top-15 class. I know it's not an exact science and doesn't necessarily translate on a one-to-one outcome, but I believe if we want to be a top-10 program, we need to have consistent top-15 recruiting classes. I just don't think that is an unrealistic expectation at a place like Nebraska.

If some just quit calling for Bo's head and gets behind this team like the rest of us.
:violin I'm a supporter of Pelini, but trust me, it will really help you in the end if you begin to realize in life that not everyone is going to like the same things you do. It's a fairly easy concept to grasp.

I think you should be prepared for some disappointment. Just my opinion though.

1) Coaching Changes: Just in general, I’ll be happy if we hire a competent DC who will help out with recruiting. Stoops would fit this bill. But if not Stoops, I don’t necessarily think we need to get a big name to meet these two requirements.

2) Bowl Game: Just win baby.

3) Recruiting Class: I REALLY like the commits we have now. If we can fill out our class with the same type of guys I’ll be very happy.

I wouldn't say HUGE strides by any means....yes, I do think South Carolina is loaded with talent...esp. on defense, but they aren't a TON or STRIDES better than Nebraska....for the simple reason that this South Carolina team has struggled with mediocre teams at times.

1). Coaching Changes: Barney Cotton needs to be F :steam RED. We need to stop playing patty cake football on the offensive side by being too conservative, and defensively get a solid DC (doesn't have to be Stoops) that will be a good recruiter and makes kids play with tenacity.

2). Bowl Game: W

3). Recruiting: We have done a pretty good job already but the additions of a Beaver, Rios, Diggs, Valentine, Seisay, Peat, Fuller, Lambert would be nice, obviously won't get all, but need a few of those kids.

Coaching changes: Bo knows what he's doing... I think.

Bowl game: I just want us to compete. Whether we win or not, it doesn't matter that much to me. I just can't handle another blowout loss.

Recruiting: I realistically want to land AT LEAST 5 out of the following: Diggs, Peat, Lambert, Fuller, Beaver, Rios, Siesay, Moss, Leggett, Stanley, Nance. Any less than 5 of these guys and I would be a little disappointed I guess. It's never good when you have to settle for another player because your first choice went somewhere else.

Staff Hires:

Defense - I don't care which route they take just get a great recruiter and coach on Defense. be that by bringing in a Stoops or a Zook or even Ray Rhodes as DC and keeping JP on the line or by promoting JP to DC and bringing in a great line coach. Either way just don't underhire the program's level anymore.

Offense - Send Barney upstairs with Jamrog give Garrison the line and hire another good coach like Scott Frost (unlikely) Ed Warriner (Yes Please), David Beaty (very solid), Turner Gill (No Chance) or another credible candidate. Again just don't underhire the program's level or bring in someone to train on the job. I could MAYBE handle a promotion from within, ie. Marrow to TE coach or Ganz to QB's on offense if the D is properly taken care of.

Bowl - show up and compete above all else but also would like it if they come out with a slimmed down, faster D (got too fat this year) and show some new things on offense that show the offensive progression both in scheme and in Taylor's grasp and ability level. (like continued throwing improvement)

Recruiting - Get the MUST have guys (Peat, Seisay and Zaire for example) and finish strong with the rest of the class. No throwaway scholarships.
