The Pundits are wrong

Combing through the articles today I read a slough of them suggesting that Nebraska's defense has to shape up fast or we're in trouble and that our performance Saturday was a joke and lack luster. Our defense plaed more than well enough to win the game. The final score would have been 29-24 if the offense wouldn't have allowed a safety and the 30 yards of penalties in the 4th didn't occur giving them a TD rather than a FG. I personally feel our defense played far above how they did last year.

One thing all the pundits missed was, 1 the field position the offense put the defense in every Hokie possession, and 2 the amount of time the defense spent on the field. When your drives only last for 3 plays, 8-9 at best on offense you're wearing out your own defense by playing them on the field constantly. The culmination of the two really made it a bear on the back of the defense. I thought we did very well in terms of effort and passion. We made mistakes in the secondary no doubt, but definitely not as horrible as the rest of the country makes us out to be.

I think it is really difficult to determine future success based off of this game. MU and TT are very different in offensive styles than VT. NU had issues early with the power running game, neither of the next two opponents have one of those. However a mobile QB for VT caused issues, Chase Daniels is certainly mobile but is he as elusive as Tyrod?

no he's no where near as elusive.... hes just twice the player

Yes, that has an effect on the defense, but this Hokie offense has not been very good most of this year and the defense, at some points, could not stop the Hokies between the 20s. It very easily could have been much worse if the Hokies were able to keep going instead of settling for 4 field goals. The Huskers were fortunate to be in the game, period. Yes, they played hard, but the defense is still not very good. We'll see how it stacks up at the end of the year, I think they will improve, but are not going to be show stoppers. The offense's inability to run the ball and control the clock is partly to blame. If the offense could chew more of the clock by running the ball, it would make the defense look a lot better. Watson states he has confidence in the run, but if a drive or 2 stalls without getting the run established, he seems to get skittish and throw it out the window. I don't get it. They will never be able to run the ball if there is never a rhythm established in the first place.

It sounds refreshing that the defense had some moments, until you realize this was the same team that managed 3 whopping pts. in the first half vs. Furman. Anyone know where Furman is? Anyone know they had a football team?

Maybe we were just out-coached...who knows. But I'm very far from giving this defense any kudos.

I have to agree with you. I'm not really sure if it's coaching or player's mental mistakes because there were way too many receivers running wide open all over the field.

Yeah...my impression of what Asante looked like the entire game...

:dunno

Asante's a perfect example! There was play where the corner blitzed, which means that Asante has to cover the outside receiver and of course he didn't get over there and it was huge gain. There were more than a couple mental break downs like that.

i think the coaches are decent, at least, but the talent, physical and mental, of some of the guys on D is not so hot.....bottom line, when you give up 35 points, you won't win many games......blame the O or the D...

but as a team, giving up 35 will not win many games.....especially with no running game, whatsoever! <_<

cotton and watson are flat-a$$ wrong.....they need to be worried about the run blocking and they need to keep working on it and stop the denial!

I thought the Huskers were going to have 8 in the box, take away the run and QB draws, and force Taylor to throw to beat them. Instead it looked like zone coverage. Their receivers had a lot of space. And VT moved the ball well enough on the ground. Just looked bad out there.

Got to regroup this week. Need to scheme better and execute. And they better bring their "A" game.

I get the feeling that practices this week will not be easy by any means.

How were they 'fortunate'? They were in the game because the defense forced 4 red zone FGs instead of GIVING UP 4 TDs. Fortune and luck had nothing to do with it. I don't remember VT kicking any field goals on second or third down, they were forced to kick FGs - not 'settle' for them. Period. Check out the 'we'll only win two more games' thread, you'll love it.
