Special Teams Player
Here are the percentile rankings for nine categories using all the games played between FBS teams:
Passing Offense: Purdue 54 and Nebraska 49
Passing Defense: Purdue 67 and Nebraska 32
Rushing Offense: Purdue 32 and Nebraska 31
Rushing Defense: Purdue 62 and Nebraska 51
Scoring Offense: Nebraska 42 and Purdue 31
Scoring Defense: Purdue 83 and Nebraska 35
Total Offense: effectively a tie at 43
Total Defense: Purdue 66 and Nebraska 54
Turnover Margin: Purdue 60 and Nebraska 32
It bears mentioning that Nebraska has played the 15th-toughest schedule to Purdue's 19th, per footballperspective.com.
Here are the percentile rankings for the same categories using just the games between conference teams:
Passing Offense: Nebraska 57 and Purdue 27
Passing Defense: Purdue 67 and Nebraska 54
Rushing Offense: effectively a tie at 23
Rushing Defense: Purdue 52 and Nebraska 37
Scoring Offense: Nebraska 28 and Purdue 8
Scoring Defense: Purdue 77 and Nebraska 41
Total Offense: Nebraska 35 and Purdue 21
Total Defense: Nebraska 65 and Purdue 64
Turnover Margin: Purdue 43 and Nebraska 36
The teams Nebraska has faced in the conference have put up better stats than those Purdue have faced so far this season (so we have the SOS edge here again).
If you average these numbers up, Purdue looks about fourteen percentile points better using the stats that included the out-of-conference games. If you just look at the games between teams from the same conference, though, the Boilers' numbers to date are practically equal.
To sum up, let's just look at the averages of the averages (for all the categories I'm using above - turnover margin only factors in for the "all categories" one, of course):
average percentiles for all offensive categories using all FBS games' data: NU 41 and PU 40
average percentiles for all defensive categories using all FBS games' data: PU 70 and NU 43
average percentiles for all categories using all FBS games' data: PU 55 and NU 41
average percentiles for all offensive categories using just conference games' data: NU 36 and PU 20
average percentiles for all defensive categories using just conference games' data: PU 65 and NU 49
average percentiles for all categories using just conference games' data: PU 43 and NU 42
Their defense has posted better numbers than ours either way. Our offensive numbers, though still not even average overall, are markedly better than theirs if you look at the second sample. You've got to work to be an optimist as a Cornhusker fan nowadays. I have found a reason to hope.
p.s. - They've played Michigan, Minnesota, Rutgers, and Wisconsin for their conference games. Louisville, Ohio, and Missouri were their OOC opponents.
p.p.s. - Here are the national rankings per these two methods (w/o any SOS adjustment having been made):
