the year before Bo got here

All-Conference
I think people forget how bad that team was. granted they didnt get absolutely blasted as many times as last year, but they were really not a good team, esp on defense. then bo shoed up and things changed.

ther are some things that really jump out at you there. about every defensive catagory was down. yards per game(rushing, passing, and per attempt) another thing that jumps out to me is the 3 of points scored in the 3rd quarter. that was a huge problem in 2002(and 2007) and look at what 03 did: 22 points total.

I really dont think we are as far away as some people are saying

The problem is that not everyone has the same notion of "getting there". In other words, as far away from what? Plus expectations change as the team does better/worse. So some will think we're not far away and some will think we are far away, regardless of the results.

But I do agree with your main point that the D could be significantly improved regardless of the players.

I guess it depends on what the destination is that people are shooting for. If it is being a player in the north race, and a good shot at the conference, then we are not that far off. If it is national championships, then we are a ways off.

The thing that has me concerned is the fourth quarter, not the third.

SCORE BY QUARTERS 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Total

-------------------- --- --- --- --- ---

Nebraska............ 93 74 95 60 - 322

Opponents........... 48 43 22 75 - 188

Though something that is encouraging:

TOTAL OFFENSE G Plays Rush Pass Total Avg/G

----------------------------------------------

Lord, Jammal 13 391 948 1305 2253 173.3

Davis, Josh 13 138 600 0 600 46.2

Ross, Cory 13 130 575 0 575 44.2

Horne, David 12 107 441 0 441 36.8

Dailey, Joe 8 47 122 117 239 29.9

Total.......... 13 908 3063 1422 4485 345.0

Opponents...... 13 875 1551 2312 3863 297.2

Even only averaging 345 total yards of offense per game (vs. 468.2 ypg this year) we still managed to out average our opponents by 10.3 points per game and held out opponents to less than 300 ypg vs over 470 this year.

With those numbers, NU should generally be far enogh ahead at the end of the third quarter to win most games.

1st 2nd 3rd 4rth Overall

Seriously? Are you concerned about numbers from 5 years ago? What won't you people nit pick?

But I do agree with your main point that the D could be significantly improved regardless of the players.

I have heard people say we will be in the bottom of the big 12 for a few years... I dont think that is the case. I think we are not that far away from being a top 25 team.

ok.. well then look at the 2nd half as a whole and compare it to last year and 2002..... thats a huge improvement

It's good to look back occassionally, but as far as the past season is concerned, this defense struggled against third downs. Drives were constantly kept alive by the opponents no matter what the distance was.

Comparing the diff of 02 and 03, then jumping ahead to 07 and 08's possibilities doesnt do much for me.

This group is needing to start from scratch. Players, coaches, towel boys, whatever. Gotta build it brick by brick. I'm not forgetting how much of a mess it was.

Lol only reason I posted these stats that troubled me as people posting stats to try and justify why they think Bo will be great here. So I used those same facts to raise some doubt. But anyways, I also agree with Addison that we will need to totally rebuild, start completely over. This will take some time, time I'm willing to wait. I just really hope Bo can turn it around enough to not get totally demolished next year like we were this year. Need some more exciting games to get the blood pressure up XD

Go Big Red

I see no reason to just mail in next year. I see no reason why we cant win games with the kids we have. I would never except that as a player or a coach.
