I like 70-30 (for 80 offensive plays, that'd be 56 runs, 24 passes). That's a good mix and it assumes a healthy mix of different types of running and judicious use of the passing game, mostly to stretch the field. That's what Tommy brings to the table and I think it will work really well if we're willing to stick with it.
I think he has good potential for the zone read. We're not looking at 60-yard gains from these plays the way we would with a faster or more elusive guy, but that's not necessary. If he can get up to speed on making the reads, he'll make some hard-nosed runs and the zone read will be a consistent short gainer (at worst). Defenses taking away the RB will have to live with a lot of grind it out, move the chains action. Defenses leaving Ameer open will be punished for their folly. If we're to run with that amount of frequency, we'll need the zone read to be part of the attack &emdash; just so we can keep hitting defenses in different ways.
What we've been told about Johnny Stanton is intriguing, though. He's better with the short passes, and it sounds like that fits more of Beck's vision for his offense. Personally, short of outstanding development as a passer, I favor the heavy run + long pass offense, but I wonder if that's what we'll see anyway and also if Stanton won't have a shot to come in and take over at some point this season. Especially if we're struggling.
