Rutland, VT -- A Danby teenager is facing charges that he photocopied and then tried to spend a fake $20 bill at the Vermont State Fair.

Adam P. Cole, 17, is due in Vermont District Court in Rutland on Monday to answer two felony counterfeiting charges. One charge involves photocopying the bill, the other is trying to spend it. He could be sentenced to 14 years in prison on each charge. Rutland City Police said the charges stem from an incident Sept. 10 during the 10-day state fair held in Rutland.

Rutland Police said a woman operating a game at the fair reported Cole gave her what appeared to be a fake $20 bill. Police said the fake bill appeared smaller than a real bill and that the bottom edge wasn't cut straight.

The woman showed police the $20 bill, which appeared to be smaller than a real $20 bill, and the bottom border was cut at a strange angle, Officer Earl Post wrote in an affidavit.

"The texture of the bill was the texture of printing paper," Officer Earl Post wrote in court documents.

Cole was still at the booth when police arrived, court documents said.

"I asked Cole if he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill to the game attendant and he stated, 'Yeah I did, I wanted to see if it would work,'" Post wrote.

Police said Cole had a real $20 bill with the same serial number as the counterfeit bill. Cole told police he made the fake bills by copying the real one on a home computer.

Police later discovered four additional fake bills at the fair.
