Tom Shatel: First downs, second guesses
BY TOM SHATEL

• This just in: Nebraska is 3-0.
• Now Bill Callahan knows what Frank Solich understood: sometimes winning isn't enough.
• Just a thought: If NU is devoid of playmakers, as Jay Norvell said, then what about the freshmen skill position players who we were told were playmakers?
It might be time to start getting the kids some serious playing time, including quarterback Harrison Beck. It's too early to throw starter Zac Taylor under the bus. But if your quarterback is going to take a season to develop, wouldn't you rather it be the freshman hot shot recruit?
Oh, by the way, Nebraska plays USC, Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State each of the next two years. And that's just the appetizers.
Might be nice to have an experienced quarterback for that bull rush. The Callahan Era might depend on it.
• I don't know if the West Coast offense is too complicated for college football. I do know this: If it's too complicated for the playmakers on your roster to play, then it's too complicated.
You get the vibe from Callahan that even he doesn't know if this is going to work.
• I wish NCAA football officials would think before they hand out unsportsmanlike penalties.
• Memo to Brent Musburger: Put it in a cup next time, like everyone else in Lincoln.
