Top "Five" Things We Know from Husker Practice

All-Conference
I was listening to the Podcasts of Unsportsmanlike Conduct, and Mike'l and John (since Kugler is in Beijing)listed "five" things we know for sure based on the Huskers practices up to this point:

1) The defense is way ahead of the offense. The defensive line is at times dominating the offensive line during practices.

2) Starting secondary if the season started today: Murillo, Prince, Asante, and Thenarse.

3) Ricky Henry does not play around during practice. He's "nasty" and "mean" on the field.

4) The number three wide receiver is Holt (behind Peterson and Swift).

4a) Remember Kenneth Moore for Wake Forest? He ran that fire reverse and WR when they needed him... Don't be surprised to see Paul and Gilleylen similar plays throughout the season.

5) Wortman is the best and most athletic LB on the field right now.

5a) Right now, Roy Helu is challenging Marlon Lucky for major playing time, and many who have seen both of them play say that Helu is more instinctive and he is going to get a surprising amount of playing time.

I hadn't hear anything about the D-line dominating the O-line?! Haven't had much time to listen to sports nightly or anything lately. What have they said?

Not many guys to put in there for the defensive line, especially after the release of Dixon. However, there are many young guys stepping up to the challenge, especially Crick. As they say in hockey, he is "standing on his head."

They didn't go into anymore details on the Podcast.

Pretty much all of those things sound good to me, except the part about our offensive line, supposedly the best since "the Pipeline," is getting pushed around.

Our OLine is looking pretty good though, I've stopped by practices a few times here on campus.. Jones makes a big impact in the place of burkes, he is physical, big and quick, would really wish we could get burkes back though.

Are the practices as intense and physical as we have been hearing?

It really depends on what unit / what part of practice you show up at, part of the practices are pretty physical and the other parts are a lot of drills / fundamentals (go figure). One big thing though is the coaches are working with every player on their fundamentals. The biggest chance from last year I have seen is, 1 attitude of the players, they are more motivated / willing to learn / want to get better, 2 the atmosphere and commrodere of the players, last year at practices it seemed like players were knocking each other down after plays (mentally) instead of building each other up. I can tell you this much, the huskers look & talk like a team, something we haven't had for a while. I can tell you this much though, I am really impressed by physicality of both the lines though. Should be a good year, I am moving out of my current dorm and into my fall one for the next few hours, but if I have time I'll sneak over with a camera and film a little and youtube it if you want.

The thing that is going to kill us this year is depth on the defensive line. As long as they are healthy, the people that are starting are more than adequate to do the job, but if someone gets hurt it is going to be a real booger to try and replace who goes down. Some of the underclassmen have got to step up and do the job this year.

The combination of this observation and Barney Cotton scares me...

From years of observation, Cotton seems immensely qualified to take a boat load of experienced and qualified linemen and turn them into a subpar offensive line that will leave a passing QB running for his life. If Ganz is as mobile as I've heard, he may survive the year but I don't expect to see the long ball pass production out of him that I saw at the end of last year. Things should work out though with a strong running and short passing game. Cotton did okay with his run blocking schemes. We just didn't have any running backs that stayed healthy enough to take advantage of it.

If you like "3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust" football...you're in for a treat this year!

Good one!!

I love the conflicting reports, since I've been hearing the O-Line is one of the best units on the team. Next thing you know, we'll be hearing about the kickers using puppies as footballs.

:clap their not??

I hope Western Michigan comes into Lincoln thinking we are down and out...I want to see 150 points put up by the offense and the defense, then sit back and watch those idiots at ESPN criticize Nebraska because we didn't show them anything, and tell us that someone like Hawaii is better...what a joke!!

It is hard to get a really good report this time of year. Everyone that is really on the field, watching our team, are all homers. They report more with their heart and hopes than they do by comparison. We will know about where we really stand after the VT game. We will know just how much work we have to do, and we will definitely know which players are coming to play, and which ones are the pretenders like we had last year.

If it is ok to do that than by all means but I would be careful, we don't need the whole world watching our practice. I can't get youtube here @ work but everyone else here might enjoy it. Just keep it coming whenever you get a chance to update us or tell us something you witnessed watching practice. The info is great to hear from someone who has actually seen parts of practice. Thanks.
