Transition Year and Work in Progress

I just read in the Lincoln paper that the first year under Coach C was a Transition year, and the second year is "A work in Progress." My question is...Is there a difference. From what it sounds the offense hasn't improved a lot, they may have taken small steps, but when your not converting third downs, thats not progress. When do we quit making excuses or putting labels on this football team, and hold our coaches accountable for the main issues...x's and o's. I have been impressed with what I read about the defense, starting to sound like the blackshirts we have grown to love. However, converting third downs is x's and o's. I read that Coach C is an offensive wiz...this is a joke to me. In the first 2 games of the season we have scored 25, and 31 points a game. One of the teams we played we should have scored 40-50. I can excuse WF, they do play in the ACC against Miami, Florida State, Va Tech, etc. But if he is an offensive wiz why aren't there more points...and the writer said he will find a way to move the chains...not converting 3rd downs...don't see the chains moving. As of right now, I don't see a difference between "A Transition Year," and a "Work in Progress."

I'm not a fan of BC or the WCO in the least - however, I think Taylor and the Offense needs more than 2 games to settle in.

Good teams find ways to win and great teams can win in more than one way. Right now, the Huskers are playing good special teams and great defense (two things which are probably harder to get right than offense). Add offensive production to that, and the rest of the season looks pretty good.

Give it a few more games and let's see what happens.

Yes, there’s a difference. A transition year means precisely that – transitioning from one coaching staff to another. Transitioning from one offensive scheme to another. A work in progress simply means that once the transition is complete, players have to learn that system - the techniques, the plays themselves, and so forth.

From what it sounds the offense hasn't improved a lot, they may have taken small steps, but when your not converting third downs, thats not progress. When do we quit making excuses or putting labels on this football team, and hold our coaches accountable for the main issues...x's and o's. “Xs” and “Os” don’t appear to be the problem – execution and consistency does. Players are doing what they are coached to do for a couple of plays, and then failing to do it for the third. And all it takes is one player’s failure to perform his role for the play to break down. That’s both execution and consistency. Takes time, particularly for an offensive line, to develop that. For a lot of these players, this is their first significant playing time in a major college environment. That makes it even tougher.

The scheme appears to be sound – it’s getting all eleven players to execute correctly for each play and for every play.

See above.

I think on offense the transition may be more difficult because of the O-line. F-Thomas hasn't looked good, and losing Christiansen was a huge blow. Austin will probably never be 100% Add to that not having much depth and our struggles are obvious. We can't open holes, we can't protect as well as we should be, and that throws the entire offense off.

O-line is probably the toughest position on the field besides QB to master. The players themselves have admitted to not hearing the plays right in the huddle. Whose fault that is, I don't know, but when one of the linemen screw up, the entire play usually blows up. If these guys can gel and become a bit above average, I think the offense will start clicking like we did to begin the 3rd quarter on Saturday a little more often.

We completely revamped the entire team. It's going to take a while for everything to get to where it should be. Once it gets going then we can start to redshirt players, develop them for 2-3 years before we start them. Right now we're playing with whatever we can get. I'm not suprised at all with where the team is at right now, and I don't look at it negatively at all. None of us are used to this kind of rebuilding, so alot of us have a doomsday notion lurking in the back (or some of you the front) of our minds. But, it can and will continue to get better.... MUCH better. These days are going to be long forgotten in a few years.

So as for transition year/work in progress. It's going to be both for a few more years for sure. Does not mean we won't win games, doesn't even mean we can't win a big12 champ, or even a BCS champ. It just means that the systems that BC and company have brought in need time to sink in, and as far as players.. it's gonna take a few years to get to the point where we have enough players to be comfortable with, that we can bring in new recruits.. give them a couple years to practice.. learn the systems, then let them in. Just takes a while to get to that point. And we're seeing that now.

I think the difference is last year our QB gave the games away that we should have won and this year our QB is still learning the O but is smart enough to not turn the ball over as much and punt.

2004 2 games 7 ints record 1-1

2005 2 games 3 ints record 2-0

I like what the guys on 'Unsportsmanlike Conduct' were saying today...that the biggest difference between us and ND is that Weis is ADJUSTING the WCO to his offense's strengths, and BC, although he said he has adjusted his playbook, is still relying on the entire offense to learn probably WAY more than they can handle. I'm sorry, but these guys are young, and need a plan that will be more suited towards gaining WINS, not NFL experience.

Slight difference. Notre Dame has a quarterback who has been in the west coast offense under Willingham for the last couple of years. He also has an offensive line that has been pass blocking for a few years, and receivers who have been running slants and outs for the last few years. We have none of those. Its easy to "adjust" his playbook because they have probably allready run about three quarters of it in the past. Callahan is working with players that are completely green, and I have seen improvement so Im not going to throw him under the wheels yet.

I do last year at this time we were 1-1 this year 2-0. Coach C isnt the one catching or trying to catch the ball

Both are a big word phrase excuse if you ask me. Callahan said last year we are going to explode soon and we take what we want. This year he's already saying we are showing flashes of consitency which makes no sense. He says we are just a step away or something like that. Plzz....... We are miles away if you ask me.

Heh, speaking of ND - I remember a time when people were saying "Oh NO, he's gonna turn us into Notre Dame!! " And now, the tides have turned a little bit. Go figure

I doubt diehard intended this to be malicious and overall is a respectful member, so I wouldnt take it to heart benard. Its normal for us to get frustrated with each other around here, and I think we can agree that a comment like this is relatively innocuous.

But yes it was disrepectful & off-topic, so diehard and others Im asking you to refrain from making similar comments when not Behind The Woodshed. Thanks.
