Trusting Taylor?

Here comes some Taylor talk. Get used to it as the long dead period begins.
On the subject of redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez, a couple of post-Spring Game quotes from defenders caught my attention.

The first one's from linebacker Eric Martin. “There’s a lot of trust going around in Taylor right now,” Martin said. “Everyone is trusting him to get us out of the third-and-longs.”

Then there was this from cornerback Prince Amukamara. "Taylor Martinez is obviously very, very, very explosive. I love when the ball is in his hands because it's very exciting to see." When defenders who see a quarterback all 15 practices are offering up praise and talking about trusting him, I think that means a whole lot. Part of winning a quarterback job is winning the faith of your peers.

Don't get it wrong. If you asked me to predict who would start the opener, right now I'd say Zac Lee. And Martinez had an advantage over Cody Green on Saturday, because it was our first time seeing him at quarterback. So of course there was going to be buzz. It's partly the product of debuting at a position.

But Martinez has to feel like he accomplished a lot this spring. If you perceived him as not really being in the QB race? Well, he is.

What do you think? Cody Green, Taylor Martinez, Zac Lee? What impresses you? What worries you? Do you trust one over the other?

Dammit, Christopherson, get out of my mind!

I was just thinking of posting a poll about this, even though I know it's really early. The poll was going to be, who do you trust more with a game, Cody Green or Zac Lee, with an Other option (because T Mart is still too young to name on a poll for my taste).

You might know his older brother, K Mart, and his uncle Wal-Mart. Same family.

so what you are saying is that he is a good value. he'll get the yards in bulk without costing the team too much?

i trust taylor more for stability. not many big mistakes, but not many big plays. i think green would be high risk/high reward. i would say i trust lee more because of his experience, but that is just one factor in the qb race. maybe green could gain more stability as a starter. but right now, i trust lee more and think he will be the starter. just an observation, i don't favor one qb over another.

Martinez made the mistakes that Green made last year. Forcing the ball to someone who he had no business throwing too. I really do love his athleticism, but his decision making while throwing kind of makes me worry. At this point I want the bowl game Lee starting, with Green backing him up if only because Green's already gone through the freshman jitters, and Martinez coming in as an extra rushing threat.

age is not a decider in a qb race.
If you're directing that at me, I agree. I chose my words poorly there. I meant to say basically that Martinez hasn't done anything to put on a poll yet... that Spring Game stardom isn't enough. I'm still not wording this well, but you get the gist.

i think age plays a role to the extent that age affords a player more experience and you have a better idea with a guy you have seen on the field than one who has not. kind of a 'better the devil you know' type of thing.

I agree, to early to annoint this young man, but the coaching staff new what they had last year and were smart to red shirt him, I for one wasn't sold on green and Lee just wasnt the answer last year, he was all we had. I will have to wait and see what martinez has to offer, But so far so good, No doubt he is ahead of the other 2, Don't be surprised if he gets the nod, or relaces someone early. Carnes may be in the mix aswell. Go Huskers.

i would agree that he is ahead of green at this point, but he is certainly not ahead of lee....

I would say Martinez is ahead of where Green was at this stage last year, but he is not ahead of Green as we speak.

My "depth chart" right now would go:

1A - Zac Lee

1B - Cody Green

2 - LaTravis Washington

3 - Taylor Martinez

4 - The Rest

I'm a big believer in experience, which is why I have LTW ahead of Martinez, but it's not going to surprise me in the least to see Martinez ahead of LTW come Fall. I liked what I saw of Green on Saturday, and if Lee doesn't come back strong and ready to go in Fall Camp, Cody is going to start, no question. He's getting there.

I agree on all accounts here, especially the bolded. Green still seems jumpy & not as composed as either Lee or Martinez. And when you're jumpy, it's easier to throw where & when you shouldn't; it's also easier to stare down your WR & we all know the risk in that (eg. Baylor's pick6).

Here's how I see things...

Lee will throw twice as many TDs as he does INTs. He is the most efficient, least risky passer of the three. Green's TDs & INTs are a wash b/c he still takes unnecessary risks & has tendency to hone in on his receivers. Like Green, Martinez' will probably throw just as many INTs as he does TDs; however, he will score more rushing TDs than either of the other 2, which makes him a less risky QB than Green in my book.
