Plainfield, CT -- Company officials with the Central Village Shell in Moosup have rectified a diesel gasoline mix-up earlier this week that caused damage to at least 20 vehicles.
Sunday and part of Monday, customers at the E. Main Street Shell station filled their gas tanks with diesel that had been put in the 87-grade gas pumping tank, General Manager Mike Celone confirmed Friday.
Celone said by Monday afternoon the diesel was removed from the 87-grade fuel tank and replaced with the correct gas. Celone said he is reimbursing customers who received the wrong gas and have had to undergo auto-repair work for damages.
"It's an error, it's a mistake," Celone said. "It's unfortunate because we really don't know how the error occurred."
Some customers incorrectly thought the Plainfield Shell station on Route 12, at 600 Norwich Road, was the location of the gasoline error. The station has received hundreds of calls on the matter and has lost some business, Plainfield Shell Owner Tom Durocher said.
Durocher said his gas station does not offer diesel fuel and was not involved in the incident.
