USA Today's Paul Myerberg: Nebraska football, Mike Riley balance change and tradition

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
The red balloons went off as expected, lofting and swaying into a bright blue sky after an eight-yard touchdown run by sophomore Adam Taylor produced the first score of Nebraska's spring game.

There were 76,881 fans in the stands, as expected, since this is Nebraska, and locals turn out in droves for any on-field experience, springtime or otherwise.

Tom Osborne's name still graces the east and west sidelines of Memorial Stadium, a fitting testament to his lasting impact upon this athletic department — as a coach, first and foremost, and then as the athletics director, riding back into town in 2007 to provide stability to a program reeling through the dying days of the Bill Callahan era.

The same phrases line the exterior of the stadium: "Through these gates pass the greatest fans in college football," one reads. Another: "Not the victory but the action; not the goal but the game; in the deed the glory."

That's awesome. Paul is loving him some Nebraska.

Loved this quote from Mike Cavanaugh:

"Let's not kid anybody, we've got to win," offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh said. "That's part of this business. I know we're going to do everything the right way, with integrity, because that's the way Mike does it. But we've got to win."
