I didn't get to watch the game last night because I was on an airplane. I did keep an eye on the score and right before take off it was half time and I thought we were in it. After I landed I was surprised to see the change. After reading over some posts late last night and this morning I decided to give a view expecting the worst. I have only watch up too the second pick in the 3rd Quarter but I wanted to say it looked like we had a pretty damn solid game plan going in from the offensive side of the ball and Keller's second pick was on the only big thing I saw go wrong from the O side of the ball.
The defensive line was just plain and simply overmatched. USC O line was in the backfield on our LBs with relative easy and there isn't any damn scheme other then maybe a 5-2 that could have changed that. We just got owned on the D line and I don't think you can blame coaching on that. Bud Wyatt said coming in he was surprised in regards to what he had (meaning 4 starters leaving from the previous year) so although hopeful they aren't last years d line. Suh is still a good one but getting little to no help when the rest of the line is undersized. They exploited our d line with relative ease, hopefully we will improve there as the year goes on.
There definitely was some poor tackling and that can be a mix of bad coaching and just players not executing. They were going full speed for sure and at times it looked as if they had just slowed down a little they could have stopped some of the cut backs, spins, etc. Seems they geared up too much for a big hit instead of just a solid tackle. I am all for big hits but not at the expense of 30, 20 and 10 yard runs.
In the end I expected better and it surely wasn't a loss to take away much from, but it wasn't as bad as what I read I believe. Hopefully the D line recruits saw the game and see there is room for them.
In the end still a lot of ball left to play and I was encouraged by what I saw on offense. Now if the defense can get there act together by the end of the year we may be able to give Texas and/or OU a run at the Big 12 title. Defense needs a lot of improvement though.
