USC announced Monday that it would begin offering four-year athletic scholarships to all scholarship student-athletes in football and men’s and women’s basketball effective July 1.

This decision counters the usual one-year renewable scholarships offered by most programs to student-athletes. It gives a player a guaranteed four-year scholarship, eliminating the possibility of a scholarship not being renewed at the end of a season.

USC athletic director Pat Haden said this policy will be implemented for all current student-athletes and future student-athletes in those three sports.

“In taking this action, USC hopes to help lead the effort to refocus on student-athlete welfare on and off the field,” Haden said in a USC release.

I don't think so either. I was curious if we'd try it when the rule was changed a couple years ago. I would think it would be a drawing card (albeit a small one).

I think that this is the right way for kids who deserve to not have to worry if there athletic gift will allow them to continue to increase there education.

Hats off to USC for doing this. Now dont just give it to the Ultra-talented..

Doesn't the B1G already do this?

And for USC - 4 year scholly? Does that mean after 4 years they have to give back the car and mom has to move out of the house?

What role would academics have to play in this. I don't know how scholly's even work but when it comes to not renewing a scholly due to whatever reason, how would this be administered for a 4 year scholly?
