using the nickel package as our base defense..

Five-Star Recruit
with all the spread teams we played or will play would it make sense to just make the nickel defense as our base defense...i know georgia did this to get more speed on defense and it seems to work pretty good for them ...just curious what you guys think_<

That has been pretty much the base defense the first 2 games. Wortman has played about 20 snaps total and Hagg comes in as the nickel.

nickel defense = bad defense. It used to drive me crazy when Missouri would pass underneath the defense time after time under Osborne when he would go to the nickel late in the game to keep them from going deep.

I am not a fan of the nickel defense.

Nickel Defense is not the same as prevent. You can still blitz and do a lot of good things on D with 5 DB's as opposed to the standard 4.

NOT AT NEBRASKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A base nickel will never work in the Big 12. We would only be limiting ourselves, and it wouldn't play to our strengths anymore than a 3-4 would!

You think Pelini has built his rep with a bogus defensive scheme? Hey guys I know this cover two stuff has worked for years but lets scrape it for some fixer upper base D after game two! Come on!!!

In certain situations we will run it but we would never survive a conference opponent who commited to run on us, Which many will.

Compare our D to say OU's offense. Are they good because they don't seem to have an real identity? Or are they good because they can attack in a number of different ways, with a multitude of formations?

I can't think of one Conference team that doesn't spread you out where you need 5 DB's. Maybe I'm wrong though. A&M (don't play) is probably it maybe ISU.

Nickel is only a term on the type of personnel used. The base cover two concept is having safeties split the field deep to provide help on outside routes as well as for the shorter underneath routes. The 5 other defenders play the short underneath routes and outside routes, usually in a man to man. You can still run a cover two scheme in a nickel set, which is only what type of personnel are on the field. If the defense has 3 wide receivers, you would rather have another DB cover him man to man than a LB. Remember the Safeties have to stay deeper so moving one of them up on the third receiver is not an option in Cover 2. I think you will see alot of cover 2 with Nickel Personnel.

I think you mean prevent defense = bad defense
well prevent does what its suppose to, keep from givin up the big plays
All the prevent does is prevent you from winning. At least that is what Madden told me. <_<

It's probably a good idea to understand what nickel is before evaluating it. I'm just sayin....
