Soon, Shepard will be decked out in Team USA gear. She was chosen for the under-18 national team and will compete for the United States at a tournament in Colorado Springs in August.

It’s an opportunity she’s looking forward to, and not just because of all the new socks she’ll get for workouts and games.

“It’s an honor to get to represent your country, so it should be a lot of fun,” she said. “I just hope to play some.”

Shepard will report for training camp July 26. The team will play a few exhibition contests before the FIBA Americas U18 Championships start Aug. 6.

Eight teams from North, South and Central America will attempt to qualify for the world championships. The U.S. will play Mexico in the opening round.

Shepard was surprised to make the team after suffering a deep bone bruise in the heel of her right foot during the second day of tryouts, which were held over Memorial Day weekend. When the 12 players chosen for the squad were announced, hearing her name just about knocked her socks off.

“I was just kind of in shock,” she said. “I was like, ‘Wow.’ ”

Shepard had 17 points in just 11 min of play against El Salvador last night. So far there's no competition for the USA in the U18 play. USA has scored over 100 pts in each of first two games. But will probably play Canada in a few days and they should be better competition.

Shepard clearly belongs on the USA team.....looks real good and can dominate in the paint.

And she'll be on the NU womens basketball team next year (2015)

USA won the U18 Womens Gold ! Beat Canada 104-74 in the 2014 FIBA Americas Women's U18 Championship

Jess had 14 pts, 8 reb, and an assist or two, lead the fast break, etc etc.

Probably had her best game over all.

Congratulations Jessica Shepard ! (2015 NU bball commit.)

The 2014 FIBA Americas Women's U18 Championship features eight national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.

The top four finishing teams qualify for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women.

Shepard was on pace to be the all-time leading scorer in Nebraska history.

She tore her ACL yesterday.
