Weis won't release QB Berglund from scholarship at KU

Assistant Coach
Kansas won't release Berglund from scholarship

Until Berglund is released from his scholarship he cannot speak to other Division 1-A schools about a transfer without Kansas permission. This despite the fact that Kansas and Weis have already dismissed him from the team.

So, to recap, Charlie Weis came to Kansas and brought his own quarterbacks with him. Then, after dismissing Berglund from the team -- a decision in itself that I have no problem with -- he refuses to release him from his scholarship.

So Berglund can't play for Weis or anybody else. Such a nice guy, that Charlie Weis.

Nice guy that Charlie Weis.

Something the article did not mention is that Berglund,a freshman this past season, did not join the team last summer as planned. He had some sort of assault charge pending in his hometown that kept him away. That said, I don't see why Weis would kick him off the team but not release him from his scholarship. I can't imagine Weis is doing this just to d!(k the kid over. Must be yet more to this story that remains undisclosed. Or maybe Weis is dicking him over.

Sounds like a dicking to me. Can't Berglund file a protest with the ncaa for a formal release.

Yes, but there may be something that comes to light that he doesn't want out in the open.

And unless Weis explains his actions, this may taint some of the recruits and other current players...

Everything in that article sounds so much like the Callahan situation at Nebraska that it's not even funny...

Weis told the kid that they already decided that Crist would be the starter, and he could only compete for the backup job. What a load of crap! They haven't even seen the kid in practice yet most likely. It's just like when Sam Keller was pretty much given the starting position when we had Joe Ganz sitting on the sidelines and was a much better player.

Good thing KU is a bad football school, or I would say that Weis may be gone in 3 years. He still might....

Yeah, but Ganz never wanted to leave. He may have been the most patient guy waiting his turn that I can remember. (I guess you don't year about most of them.) So I guess Weis is more of a d!(k than Callahan in that respect.

*bump*

Turns out Weis was just being a d!(k after all. KU finally released the kid from his scholarship. But it wasn't Weis who did it:

Weis has already been involved in a public spat with former quarterback Brock Berglund, who requested a release from his scholarship and intends to transfer. Weis denied the release without giving a reason, prompting Berglund to seek legal representation.

The school's student-athlete appeals board ultimately ruled in Berglund's favor on Friday, though Weis announced the decision in a blistering press release: "I believe no individual should be more important than the team,'' he said. "Brock did not see it that way.''
