What does Suh, Neil Smith and Gunther Cunningham have in common?

Thought you'd be interested in this historical correlation. Husker great and defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh was taken 2nd in the draft in 2010 by the Lions. Another former Husker great and defensive end, Neil Smith was also taken 2nd in the draft in 1988 by the Chiefs. Both Suh and Smith wear/wore the #90 jersey in the NFL. Gunther Cunningham was Smith's Defensive Coordinator while with the Chiefs where they averaged 16.4 pts. allowed per game and +30 turnover margin. Smith is a 6X Pro Bowler and future NFL Hall of Famer. Could Cunningham have another Husker great replicate what Neil Smith accomplished in K.C.? I say you bet he can.

Lets hope so!! use to love watching Neil do the baseball bat swing after sacks. I didn't realize they had that much in common with the drafts. I know it doesnt add up to much but It sure is cool to think about.

best of luck to him. And I think Suh will be good, but i see no all-pro LB (Thomas), there are not a pair of pro bowl corners (carter & hasty) and not a number of high level D players. I love gun, but he is more likely to give you the 99-01 & 04-08 chief D's. He just happened to luck into what was one of the more underated Defensive teams the NFL has seen in the last 20 years his first go around when he was hired in 95.

in other words, guns defenses suck

Yeah Guns has put up some mediocre to crappy defenses in the recent past. The other thing that needs to be taken into consideration now that I think about it is the fact that the Lions HC, Jim Schwartz is also a former DC himself who fielded some pretty good defenses when he was with the Titans. That was one of the reasons why he went out and acquired Vanden Bosch on the first day of free agency because Vanden Bosch along with Haynesworth were a formidable duo in Tennessee under Schwartz's direction. He obviously must feel like Vanden Bosch and Suh can also create some disruption together along with the other free agent the Lions acquired in Corey Williams.

I'm just curious how much freedom Guns has under Schwartz when it comes to scheming and whatnot? Needless to say it'll be interesting to see how the Lions defense looks for the next couple of years. Team chemistry is key.

I was reading Neil Smith's bio and it mentioned the "Neil Smith rule." Basically the d-linemen can't flinch to get the o-linemen to move. I wonder if they'll end up making a "Suh rule." Something like you can't sack the QB so hard that it leaves a dent in the field. :)

All three have an "N" in their first name?

Dangit...I could have sworn that'd be it.

He actually got flagged for this against Baylor.
