What the first thing the new coach has to do?

Special Teams Player
No 100% effort

No waves of players (depth)

No smashmouth/physical play (both sides of the ball)

Coach'em up (well prepared players)

OL/DL development (NFL loaded with top Husker DEs)

Exploit benefits of well stocked walkon program (FB's and some OL were walkons)

Bring back the pride of BIG RED FOOTBALL! The team rushing onto the field at Washington in 1997, that was Nebraska's AURA! Teams FEARED/RESPECTED those teams! Bring that back, along with the expectation of winning 10 games, now with the 12 game schedules, just like TO won 9 with 11 games! Mediocrity will not be accepted or EXPECTED!

From TOs Presser today:

"He recalled a recent conversation he had with former Colorado coach Bill McCartney.

“He said, ‘You’ve lost your identity,’” Osborne said. “I think what he was saying was that we used to be a team that people hated to play because they felt it for two or three weeks.”"

IMHO this couldn't be more true. When is the last time you saw a Husker team really punish an opponent? Until they get back to being the strongest team out there, the best conditioned, it isn't going to be the Huksers of old. I sincerely hope the new coach understands this.

Boy, I miss those days. Need to go watch the National championship bowl game where we kicked Florida's butt. and D had Danny Whurfle running for his life. SWEET!

That's the defense we need back.

Agreed...name one thing we did well. One thing we could always hang our hat on...maybe the two minute drill, that's about it.

no doubt about, we were a faceless team, known for nothing under clownahan.

yes, the change must emphasize toughness and aggressive play. no more read and react bullsh#t on D!

Ed Orgeron, interesting.......what's to like about him, Eric? got to be more than a recruiter, we just had "one of those"........

I remember a game against K-State where the players that were supposed to keep their QB safe and allow him time were practically running away from our D. It was more of a game of who gets to "Sack the QB" this time. Think it was when the older Ruud was playing, not sure. Just know that I got to tease my K-State alum cousins about it. Course they came back and rubbed it in when K-State finally beat NU.

I want the old smash mouth defense back, really really bad.

:box :box :box

:bonez :bonez :bonez :bonez :bonez

Remember Danny Wurfele getting tackled by our defense?

Florida's offensive line were throwing "LOOK OUT!" blocks!

Those are good memories, may be we can get that back. :)
