Sorry but, IMHO, that's kind of a dumb question. Knowing where to be and getting where you need to are two wholly different things. If he knows where to be, does he get there? If he gets where he has to be, doesn't that, by definition, mean he has adquate speed.

then, can he make the tackle?

I've not seen a lot of impressive tackling skills on this defense. It is so absent a skill that when a good fundamental hit, wrap and drop tackle is made, it is worthy of remark, as opposed to being the expected. It's a fundamental that appears to be overlooked.

Not stupid, Ruud knows where to be at all times. He only gets there about 50%. Octavien knows where to be at all times. He only gets there about 50%. The difference is when Octo isnt there he is making a play, when ruud isnt there he is beat. Id rather a guy play balls to the wall and make a mistake or 2 than have a guy play timid and make mistakes left and right even though he is in position

 
Speed will help you make up for not being the in the right place. You don't need as much speed if you are in the right place at the right time.

Face it, LB's have to be quick for about 20 yards or so in most every direction. They don't need to be burners that can go 40 yards in sub 4.3.

 
Blake Lawrence of the 2007 recruiting class will have the best of both. He's an above average intelligent player that will know where to be and he brings the proverbial wood. He likely will redshirt his first year but who knows.

Anyone remember Randy Stella? He had the speed and playmaking ability, but he was too stupid to get there and was always out of position. So, I guess give me a slower LB that's typically always in the right place at the right time.

If Octo isn't there, then where is he making this play at. I consider this "there" to mean "around the football". If he isn't around the football then what play is he making and how is that better than getting beat.

 
it means that sometimes he leaves his responsibility to make a play and if the cutback happens he is able to adjust and still make the play

Octavien can be good when he decides to show up, and he's healthy. Other times, he fails to impress really.

 
The athletic ability of Steve-O mated with the knowledge of Ruud would be a great combination. From the little i've seen of Dillard he will have an amazing career if he can keep from being plagued by injuries.
