I'm trying to put some statistics together for argument sake vs a Miami fan. He's going off Miami's 80's and 90's

Miami

83-NC

86-played for NC

87-NC

89-NC

91-NC

92-played for NC

94-played for NC

Help me out guys. I'm know our 90s were more dominant. Help me out with a list similar to this one for Nebraska. Is this accurate? Is there more or less that I have here? So who was more dominant???

Nebraska

81-played for NC (Lost to Clemson)

83-played for NC (Lost to Miami)

90-played for NC

(Colorado beat Notre Dame in Orange; Georgia Tech beat NU in Citrus.

CU AP champion; GT UPI champion)

91-played for NC (Lost to Miami)

93-played for NC (Lost to Florida State)

94-NC (Beat Miami)

95-NC (Beat Florida)

97-NC (Beat Tennessee)

We played for the National Championship in:

1983

1991

1993

1994 *

1995 *

1997 *

* = won MNC

We were clearly the team of the 90s. Unfortunately both Miami & Oklahoma had our number in the 80s. Argue all you want that we had the better team then, but it's pretty clear those two were the teams to beat.

That would be a tough argument to win. We had a very good team, sure, but the better team? Meh. I'd like to see someone argue in favor of that.

Nebraska

81-played for NC

83-played for NC

90-played for NC - We did not play for the MNC this year

91-played for NC

93-played for NC

94-NC

95-NC

97-NC
We were a two-loss team heading into the Citrus bowl and had no chance at the MNC. It was a fluke of bowl tie-ins that we happened to play a team that ended up with a share of the title in 1990, but saying we played for the MNC that year is not true.

Better ask theneguy95 about the argument he's making against this Miami fan. If the argument is Miami 80s vs NU 90s, then there's definitely an argument. Maybe the big argument is domination over both decades combined, but even then Miami still has the upperhand based on # of NCs (4).

I feel I won the 80's Miami vs 90's Nebraska but was then thrown the 80s 90s combined more dominant team. I was wrong about the Georgia Tech vs NU citrus bowl... NU didn't have any way to win the NC that year. NU was more a possible spoiler for GT. So we played in 7 total and they played in 7 total for 80s 90s combined but they had 4 NC won to our 3 won. Plus Miami beat NU 2/3 NCG.

* For Miami’s Final NRs I gave them 21 ranking for UPI Poll (only ranked top 20) and AP before 1991 (only ranked top 20). I gave Miami 26 ranking for NR in USA Today and AP Poll after 1990 (started ranking top 25).

Results:

NU Average Rank 80s and 90s: AP 7.9 UPI/USA Today 7.35

Miami Average Rank 80s and 90s: AP 10.2 UPI/USA Today 11.35

There's 1 argument for who was more dominant 80s and 90s combined though!

Sorry it's hard to read... It's all lined up when I type it in but ends up in a cluster when i preview/post... but first 2 numbers for each line is NU's final rank (AP and UPI/USA Today) for each year from 80-99 and the last 2 numbers for each line is Miami's final rank (AP/USA Today) for each year from 80-99

Knapp, you would count '91 also? I'm going off memory, but I think even had we won, we weren't in a position to be ranked #1. Wasn't that the Mickey Joseph led Huskers?

I think you're right. I looked it up and we were #11 heading into that game, so there's nothing we could have done to win the MNC that year. Miami had a shot (and won) but we didn't.

Wouldn't 2001 count?
I believe the arguement was between 80's and 90's teams, so that's why 2001 was not on there.

In 1991 Nebraska had Keithen McCant at QB and lost 22-0 to Miami, Mickey Joseph was originally the starter that year but was quickly repalced by McCant.

I would also count 1985 for Miami, they would have been #1 had they beaten Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl.

In 1994, would Miami have won the NC if they would have beat us or would Penn State have been the NC? I know the Penn State fans are still bitter about all that.

Miami was ranked 3rd, so their only chance to win the NC would have been to beat us and then have Penn State lose to Oregon the next day.
