What's Simple About It?

Nexus

We are going to talk a lot about simplicity and what it means on offense. Well, who are we not to beat that horse a little farther into the ground. What is simple? Does it means less plays or less words in a play? What does it really mean?

The complexity of Bill Callahan's offense seemingly made as many headlines as Callahan himself.
Did you know that under Lavell Edwards, the iconic BYU Head Coach, the Cougars had a system which often involved plays of no more than two words?
Tim Beck's version of the offense this year probably won't look a lot different than last year. The big difference is how fast plays are called, the team is up to the line and how much time there is left on the clock before they snap the ball.
Sheesh! Maybe we should give Beck a chance before throwing him under the bus. We haven't even gotten to the spring game and already Steve Ryan is up to his trolling ways!! The guy just loves to tear down the Huskers. Why does he write about NU football if he hates the Huskers so much. What a worthless douchebag.

I didn't think it was trolling at all. In fact I think he's alluding that Beck's plays will get to the line faster and therefore be more adaptable. It's just somebody's take on what the offensive changes might be - typical offseason stuff.

i am not so sure fast play and changing plays often at the line of scrimmage will be a difference maker, but i think Beck is going that direction. at least TM won't be required to think, the coaches on the sidelines will be sending in the plays after the O lines up and they read the defense...sounds like a read and react offense, maybe?

If he's not trolling then why include a pic of Bill Callahan in the first article he writes about Beck as OC? Shouldn't a Husker beat writer be giving the new staff the benefit of the doubt at this point? It just seems like Ryan wants the Huskers to stumble. So he can say "I told you so", and lead the charge to fire everybody.

maybe that means we will see more audibles at line of scrimmage.

I can only hope at this point.

For one thing, Clownahan was an ego maniac. He wanted to show the world that his much vaunted system, that he used to get beat into the ground by the Tampa Bay Bucs in the previous Super Bowl, would wow and amaze all those that faced it.

As for this guys article, I guess I can sum it up pretty quickly...

no sh*t

What???
I can't tell if my boy nuance is kidding or not. On one hand, I can't see how the article in question could be regarded as critical of Beck, but on the other hand it doesn't seem like nuane is joking. Hence, not sure if he's serious.

Perhaps I was reading a different article than you guys. Here's the article I read:

  • The article says Callahan’s offense was overly complex. Even shows a pic of Bill Callahan on the sidelines (which is odd, this being an article about Beck).
  • When Watson took over as the O.C. the offense got simplified from Callahan's offense, but was still a West Coast offense. Beck is running the same thing.
  • By contrast, T.O. only had about 15 or 16 formations in his playbook. And iconic BYU Coach Lavell Edwards called plays using no more than two words.
  • Beck's version of the offense this year probably won't look a lot different than last year, other than being faster to the line and getting the snap off sooner.

So, where's the sunshine? Like I said earlier, we haven't even reached the spring game and this jacka$$ Ryan is already starting in. I say maybe we should give Beck a season or so to see how his offense is working out. Or at least wait until mid-October before we start picking him apart. But I guess that's just me.

Either you're a massive troll, or you are f'ing clueless.

Gotta read that article again, nuance.

What I got out of it, for a summary:

- Callahan bad. Watson bad. West Coast very bad.

- BYU's iconic coach good. Tom Osborne good. Beck is like that.

Let's face it, we have spent the last few years talking more about the system than the team. There's something wrong with that. I think now it could actually be the other way around.
It is in the same vein as nearly every other Beck-related, offense-related article out there. Old bad, new - being the opposite of old in this, this, and this way - good.

While they were the "dark days" the author was right about the Callahan offense starting to click. The mention of Callahan is like saying Tsunami in Japan. :madash What? Too soon?

I thought the article was a nice history of the progression of the Nebraska offense.
