Pandas have a lot of specific attributes that make them pretty sensitive to changes. The evolutionary deck isn't really stacked in their favor. When you add the stress of living in captivity to the fact that zoos are often not structured to provide ideal mating opportunities, you have serious issues for pandas in captivity. But it's not only pandas that have trouble mating in captivity - many animals do. Many do don't know how to mate at first, again owing to how zoos are designed regarding mating. If the young can't observe normal, seasonal attempts at mating, they probably don't catch on.
There really are a lot of factors. Too many to go into here in depth. If you look up information on pandas, you'll start to see why, as cool as they are, they're most likely an evolutionary branch that wasn't going to last too long anyway.
