When is average not good enough anymore?

In the recent years of nebraska... solich era/callahan era the public eye of nebraska football has become average... 'We' (the public fanbase) stoop to think that players like ruud, grixby, shanle, and coaches like cosgrove are "good enough" to get us by. when we play teams like ku and get stomped last year and this year blow a lead to ku and osu because we cannot defend a spread style offense when is enough enough? When will nebraska become nebraska again enriched with pride and teams that want to or should i say can win a national title or at least contend for one.

GREAT POINT. Today we settle for mediocrity. There are some on this board talking about how we need to be careful with CU. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Real husker football is about winning period. Losing to OKst KU MU, giving up 500+ yds to those teams is not fine, its not ok, ITS UNACCEPTABLE.

The same with Ruud, everyone goes around looking for excuses to say how good he is. Why is it acceptable. If Coz plays him next year over the other candidates it screams of accepting mediocrity.

Rebuilding or not. Losing to also rans and giving up 500+ yds will never be fine.

WE ARE THE FRICKING HUSKERS and its time you all remember that

Agree to disagree.

Most of the people in here will say they are not content at this point and neither are the coaches or players. I can assure you that we have never lost our pride. You must realize that a team can never stay at the top every year. It's a cycle, and it just so happens that we are at beginning of the restoration.

What would you propose we do with the team/coaches/anything?

I propose new d coordinator and playing younger more talented d backs! who have fire under their belts and want to make plays and CAN make athletic plays

My proposals for what they are worth.

1. simplify the defense. fill it with speed and agression. top 25 teams play freshman all over the place yet we continuously get they dont know the system.

2. Play the freshmen in meaningful spots. can someone please explain why our starting Defense played until the final series of the Troy game.

3. If you are not going to play the frosh quit wasting eligibility. why have them run down on a few kicks instead of redshirt them. why for example is Meno Holt not red shirting. He played 2 plays on saturday both run plays you mean to tell me no other receiver could be in on that run play.

4. Go for the jugular

5. Have some competition. if i was a coach and shanle pirouetted out of the way so as to avoid contact like he did against OKst he'd never play again. That is the toughness im talking about.

6. Gametime changes. every team seems to make adjustments but we dont. tell me why it took 10 fricking games to play the 30 defense......... and if you tell me the freshmen didnt know the system im gonna puke see pt. 1

7. Play purify every play. rotate all the other receivers i dont care but dont take purify out of the game.

I'll be the first to say that Ruud does not make huge hits and Grixby doesn't always intercept it but they do get the job done right now. <-- Thats whats important be cause right now our rookies aren't ready to play. Having that "fire under the belt" is unfortunately not enough; I've been to practices and every game but two this year and I can assure you of this.

As for the new D Cord., I vote you, you seem to have the fire we need.

I agree with everything you said. Bill Callahan and staff may be great, but I'm not seeing it thus far. I think Callahan takes an NFL approach and thinks it's ok to lose one or two games, but that's not how it works in college. Every game counts and instead of playing to minimize a loss, lets play hard, lets play to win every single time! That's what I liked about Bo Pelini. I think he took the talent he had an motivated.

Sorry to sort of get off topic with the Pelini comment, but even with the win over Mizzou I'm frustrated. I want our program to be one of the best in the nation again and I'm not seeing it happen. "Winning" the north is setting our sights kind of low in my opinion.

Yea, no opponent will catch on to that and put him in constant double coverage :sarcasm

PS be back in about 3 hrs

seen practice huh me too several in fact we probably talked. i saw a different field than you. i saw thenarse and culbert and wilson and octo all outplaying the people in front of them. i saw more football speed more intensity and more "fire" i saw that they are ready to play but just arent so why didnt we redshirt them? watch tackling drills. watching ruud is seriously equal to watching th e 40 year old virgin i laughed til my sides hurt

Elliot, please think before you respond. Does Dwayne Jarrett ever come out NO does Ted Ginn NO does Mario Manningham NO the best receivers never come out the threat of them in there is good for the offense

I do think this is an excellent post. Very valid points. Great programs continually work young players in to make sure the very best talent is on the field.

Actually, yes they all do come out. Watch a Michigan game lately, Manningham, Breaston, Arrington, Tabb, and Dutch all get into the games and come out of the games to rest. USC plays about six recievers and bring out Jarrett to rest him as well.

Valid point. Let the play makers make the plays and make the other team stop them. Don't handicap the team by not having them out there.

That movie wasn't very funny imo. I love Steve Carrell, but that movie was horrible.
