It's all relative. Nebraska's population is about 5% of California's. California produced approximately 150 high school football players who signed with BCS conference teams last year alone. All other things being equal, one would assume that Nebraska should have produced 7-8 BCS school commits last year. There were 4. I would argue that the percentage should be higher than California's because of the popularity of football in the state and the accessibility of high schoolers to actually be able to make a team and play.Since 1982, the population of Nebraska has gone from 1.5 million to 1.7 million.
Since 1982, the population of Texas has gone from 14 million to 24 million.
Since 1982, the population of California has gone from 24 million to 36 million.
Where would you look for players?
And to answer you question, if I were a college coach I would first look for players in my own backyard.
