SDYote

Walk-on
Where is the post that showed the track records for new coaches brought into a program the first couple of years? I remember reading it a couple of weeks ago, but I cant find it at all.

3 Other Passing Teams:

How did other teams do their first season out of the chute w/anew heqd coach and new offensive scheme?

AUBURN 5-6-0

Tuberville took over in '99 and struggled w/a new WCO system The second year they were 9-4-0.

USC 6-6-0

Carroll took over in '01 and struggled w/a new WCO system. The second year they were 11-2-0.

OU 7-5-0-

stoops took over in '99 and struggled w/a new passing (modified WCO) system. The second year they were 13-0-0.

Why is NU still struggling in the second year? Very simply, it is because of the lack of talent and experience due to 6 yrs of poor recruiting by the previous regime. As of last week, 12 TRUE FRESHMEN had been utilized in this year's games and 27 sophomores, redshirt frosh and true frosh have played. In the last game 2 tackles were frosh (one redshirt and one true). Under Osborne that never happened. Why? Because the players that were inherited were, by and large, not of the caliber needed to win!

OU had three years of good recruiting by Blake when he was there before Stoops. This year's Notre Dame team has had the benefit of the previous three years of Wilmingham's recruiting that was excellent.

So, we are at least a year behind, or possible two, starting next season. Solich was a nice fellow and a great contributor as a player/assist coach, but a lousy recruiter, partially because all his staff didn't hit the road and partially because the 4 and 5 star kids today want an NFL type offense to play.

Just for fun, name a triple option team that was in the Top 25 this year?

Osborne rarely had to play freshman because he had over 100 guys on scholarship. The 85 limit on scholarships hurt NU more than anyone cause it kept them from stockpiling athletes. Back then many O-Linemen didn't start till they were Jrs.

Does any body remember b4 the season all of the talk of Charlie Wies and how he had no talent on the team? It was going to be impossible to rebuild N.D. Well I guess it goes to show you what a good coach can do.

Weis=Good

Yes I remember. I mentioned this in another thread about how a lot of commentators thought ND would have to lower the academic standards in order to compete. I also remember before the USC game when everyone was talking about mismatches talent-wise.

Roy: TCU runs quite a bit of option. Not like Nebraska used to...but quite a bit.

I don't know who was saying that. ND always had good classes, Willingham just couldn't put it together I guess.

Why is NU still struggling in the second year?
Because NU has one of the worst coaching staffs in college football.

Like others have said look at ND. If you dont want to look there, look at South Carolina. I believe they were 5-7, 5-6, 6-5 (billy c like) the 3 years prior to him getting there, they had very little. But Spurrier is a great college coach, they are in the top 25, going bowling, and are not making excuses. He took what he had, modified his system and won immediately.

Great coaches do that. Devaney did that. Weis did it. Spurrier did too.

billy c didnt.

:yeah Pure fact. I wouldn't argue the historical fact that they did have success in their second year. :cheers

Just wondering, isn't there a point in time to realize that Cally is here to stay? :bang

Cally didn't have the same success as said coaches... and only a few can turn a program around on a dime.

Isn't it possible, maybe, given the time agreed to by Cally and Pedey (evidently six years) he WILL get NU playing at the National Championship level? :thumbs

GO CALLY!! FOUR MORE YEARS!

I gurantee you auburn, okie and usc didn't take over 10 win teams. Most of them had losing teams they took over. Plenty of talent on this team to win imo. 2 years and we keep getting worse.

There were many people saying notre dame didn't have talent. ONe of their former alums who is like a hall of famer said as much and that they need to lower the standards to compete.

No I can't ever see that happening. The next 2 years will be like these first 2 years, I gurantee you.
