Oh yeah, I forgot about Prince too. Damn, we're turning into the USC of the midwest!!! :sarcasmI know the RB's position is getting a lot of press as being banged up and lacking depth, but take a look at what we have there. Lucky, Glenn, Culbert, Castille, Helu, Mendoza, and Wilson. Wilson should already be getting a medical redshirt, but I think maybe we should save another. Maybe Culbert for example. He's a stud athlete who needs to be on the field. But if they keep him at RB and nobody gets hurt, what are the chances he sees any playing time? That would be a waste of a season for him and talent for us if he wasn't used as a DB or as an RB. The younger guys are already plugged in to play a little bit somewhere to get acclimated to the game, may it be mop up duty or special teams, but Culbert wasting eligibility for special teams just doesn't seem right. I know special teams are important, and even more important this year (kick-offs), but it just seems like a waste of talent to me. Next year, we also have Jonas Gray coming in who should make an immediate impact and hopefully that'll allow Culbert to return to the D, where he belongs!! Anyways, just my opinion!!
I agree. But i also think we need to look at the QB position as well. I think we should red shirt Lee and Witt. With one of those guys taking the reigns next year and that would give us the option to red-shirt Gabbert next year. I think it is time we start trying to get guys staggered to where we can have them at the postion for 2-3 years. Unfortunately I think Ganz will fall victim to this, we have to look forward to having starters for successive years.(i.e. Witt or Lee starting next year and Gabbert coming in behind them)I know the RB's position is getting a lot of press as being banged up and lacking depth, but take a look at what we have there. Same opinion.. I agree with DaveH here 100%..IMO, you don't choose who you are going to redshirt before the season starts unless they
A. seriously need to put on some weight or get in shape
B. gets injured.
If someone can play and there is a need, play em. The days of stock piling players via red-shirting went out the window with the 85 player scholly limit IMO.
i didn't know the decision was up to us. is there a poll i missed?Out of our class who should we red-shirt or who would you like us to red-shirt??
well you might as well just Redshirt every freshman right off the bat, unless Callahans absolutely positve they will contribute right away...And then wind up pulling most of the redshirts as teh players get better and our needs become more apparent. But still, by doing this it might save a guy a year who doesn't progress in the system like the coaches anticipated..
Callahan seems reluctant to redshirt many players, especially defensive players. I image that he will redshirt both Lee and Witt. As he uses Keller, Ganz, and Davis as the emergency third string quarterback. It is hard to tell how the running backs will be handled. With Lucky and Gleen being banged up this fall and Culbert not having much experience yet at back. I image we will see two freshman out of Castille, Helu, Mendoza, and Prince in the backfield.
I don't think we will see either of the lineman (Jones, Burkes) play this year. Nor do I think that Hill will see any time at tight end with four guys ahead of him. We might see Paul get some action at reciever as Callahan has shown that he likes to rotate in about six guys or more during a game. I don't see CG or Hagg getting any action unless they impress enough in the return teams to see some action.
Defensively is where there could be some players see some action. I don't see Moore, Crick, or Yancy seeing any playing time this year unless one can excel as a pass rushing specialist. As far as linebackers as concerned, I see Lawerence and Washington getting time on special teams and seeing mop up duty as well to develop depth not only for this year but for next year as well. I don't see Stafford playing this year.
Secondary will get to see quite a few freshman this year as Blue has been turning heads in camp as well as Prince, if he stays on defense. I am not sure about Sullivan but he might make some coverage teams if he gets used to the speed of the game. I also expect Adi to be used this year as well.
