Quick (kinda) story on why I have decided to become a Husker fan for life:
I never was a huge college football fan up until a few years ago. I just never really got into it. Maybe it was becuase I went to a small school in Virginia that did not have a program or maybe I was just way too much into the NFL. However, as I met some new friends that we're into their school's football (one West Virginia and the other Mizzou), I started to casually keep up with it.
This year I began to get into it even more and keep up with the conference races, etc.. However, it's different when you don't have an allegiance to a school to really want to keep up with anyone in particular. Then my friend and I decided to go on a road trip this fall to see a couple of games. I live in Northern Virginia and we set a couple of days aside for this. We first stopped by the WVU v. Louisville Thursday night game when it was a top 5 matchup. Great game and neat stadium in Louisville.
We then started the long trek to the Nebraska/Mizzou game. We stopped by Columbia on the way there to visit the campus, grab some lunch (Booch's Burgers is amazing if you ever go there) and get some gear for the game. We ended up staying that Friday night near Topeka, KS at the Harrah's casino. Best shoe of blackjack I ever played. Won every single hand and walked out up $800. My buddy got hosed in their shady poker room and left broke.
Got up at 4:30 AM and headed to Lincoln to start tailgating. Based on all the games I had watched with my buddy and the Chase Daniel jersey he bought me in Columbia, I was all set to start declaring my allegiance to the Tigers. I fully expected to get shredded by the Nebraska fans, but I figured what the hell and just deal with it. Being to a few WVU games and being at the Oakland Coliseum (yes I am a Raiders fan :hmmph ), I had seen the worst in how opposing fans get treated. But, I could have never expected what was to come next:
First of all, let me start by saying the stadium is by far the most amazing sports stadium anywhere, period. It blows you away when you first pull up. We went to one of the adjacent parking lots to park and asked about where to get tickets, as we had come with none. The lady asked where I was looking to sit and now looking back how stupid this was I said "anywhere around the 50 yard line will work". She laughed and said you won't sniff one anywhere but the upper endzones. She gave me the number of another tailgater who had a few tickets. I asked how much I could expect to pay and she said "face". As in "face value"?? I couldn't believe it. Being on the east coast the only event that you get into for face value is the church league softball game.
Once we parked and setup our tailgate, Nebraska fans we're coming over and talking to us, having drinks and we're honestly the nicest people I have ever met in my life. They were helping me get the charcoal grill going and we're sharing stories of past games. I have to say that Nebraska fans know their s*#t when it comes to football. The parking lot was loaded with cool tailgates. Alot of team buses and the "meat wagon" ambulance just to name a few that I remember.
Combine that with the sea of Red that I saw when I walked in Memorial Stadium and that was it for me. This is real college football and I decided that the Chase Daniel jersey was better used as a seat cushion the rest of the game. So I'm in. This is the coolest team with the nicest, most intelligent fans that I've seen and I'm looking forward to coming to the USC and Ball State games this year. I'll also be going to the Mizzou game with my buddy again this year. However, let's make it clear that I don't expect the same hospitality I got in Lincoln due to the fact I'll be sporting a Nebraska jersey in Columbia.
Figured I would post this since it's kind of a dead period right now. Keep up all the good posts. I enjoy reading them. You guys are the best. Go Big Red!!
