it is probably not true for all programs but i have notived that some that were down get back to the top with lets say questionable players. i look at florida state with winston or auburn with cam newton. i realize not all have had those players that have roae to the top BUT i ask you would you be ok with having a player that has issues if that got NU back to the top and thus brought in better players to keep it going?
So cover up a possible rape or allow boosters to pay a player to come and play? No thank you.
I'm perfectly fine recruiting kids from bad neighborhoods with some legal history, but what college football offers is the opportunity out of that life- not the opportunity to bring that life along to college. I think that's what Osborne tried to do- offer those kids an opportunity out- and then tried to make sure those players got the extra help they needed to be successful. Often it worked. Sometimes it didn't.
But you never cover up for them, and you don't pay them. Ever.
Thank you Kernal. +1.
I don't want to be holier-than-thou guy, but I feel strongly about this.
I would NOT be ok with paying to bring a player onto our team. Especially not a me-first guy like Newton.
And I would absolutely not be ok with having a guy like Winston be the face of our program. He has brought more national embarrassment to that FSU program than any player in recent history. I don't care if it came with a national title. I'll keep waiting before I take a deal to get one of those if the cost is having an grade-A idiot with the maturity level of a middle schooler who has been alleged of rape lead leading my team.
It sickens me the way they swept that underneath the rug. Pulled directly from Wikipedia (this was cited, don't worry):
Allegations of improper police conduct have been made by both parties, with the victim claiming to have been pressured into dropping her claim and Winston's attorney alleging inappropriate leaks to the media. Adhering to Florida State's policy that athletes charged with a felony cannot play until their case is resolved, Winston continued to play throughout the investigation because he was never charged.

On April 16, 2014,
The New York Times reported irregularities in the rape investigation involving Winston. Though a medical examination of the victim revealed injuries consistent with sexual trauma – including bruises and semen – and the victim would later identify Winston by name as her attacker, Tallahassee police reportedly never obtained a
DNA sample from Winston, never interviewed him, nor attempted to obtain video of the alleged assault taken by Seminoles teammate Chris Casher. The investigation was conducted by Officer Scott Angulo, who, the Times' article notes, did private security work for the Seminole Boosters, the primary financier of Florida State athletics.

So, no, I don't want that kind of guy leading the program. I pray my NFL team wants no part of him either. We've had this problem in the past (Christensen), and it was dealt with appropriately. Those of you who have some years on me will have to speak to how TO dealt with bad apples in his day.
But I still pride our university on being the good guys and not associating with trash like Winston.
