Ok well you can move this if you want but i am finally ready.
Started out at about 11 in the morning from desmoines. Me and my mom wanted to get there early to tailgate, so we packed up the car and took off. She was doing about 90 the whole way there. Pulled into lincoln around 2 in the afternoon. Started looking for a tailgate spot, but in the confusion of seeing the biggest friggin stadium ive ever seen we missed cornhusker drive and got way cornfused
Looked around, the 1st spot we found wanted 50, i gagged. Came across a ticked scalper that wanted 150 a piece for some tickets. I yelled scalper and we took off. Finally we found a spot for 20 bucks, i asked if they tailgated there and he said sure. No they didnt so didnt even bother setting up the grill. We ate a couple cold sandwiches and took off. Headed into a big tailgate to see whats what. Lots of people grilling and drinking but we were to nervous say anything. I come across a big flat screen tv hooked onto a trailer and what do i see but the final minutes of Iowa loseing. I was so thrilled, i couldnt believe it. So i ask the guy where we can get some husker gear. Tells me about this guy down the street who sells stuff pretty cheap. We come acoss this guy with 2 fingers on one hand and dreadlocks. Funny guy we get t-shirts for 5 bucks sweatshirts for 15 and a couple other things. So we head to the stadium, i was in awe about how big the thing is. We walk around for a while seeing the campus. Beautiful.
I wanted to see the heisman trophys so we head to where some dude pointed me. Ask another scalper about tickets, says 100 each. End up somewhere and i get the picture with dr toms stachue. We wait for a while until the doors open. I go in and see the fountain awsome, pan to my right whats that ohhhhhhhhhhhhh the nebraska bell. Thats friggin old, take a bunch of pictures of that then try to head tward the trophys. Aparently there is this new thing this year so were standing there and waiting and waiting and waiting. Just before we get in they make an anouncement, the team is walking through
My camera wasnt fast enough but i got a picture of suhs leg but i got to see crick, green, lee the whole dam team. The heisman presentation was nice but i thought it was alittle to much. Could of just thrown the trophys behind some glass and i would of been fine. So i ask where the championship trophys are. I get directed to the front of the stadium. Head that way and see another scalper 90. Pass a runza stand with no runzas. Get to the trophys, that was something, orange bowl, gator, sugar they were all there. The champoinship trophys were awsome. Buy this whole time im trying to explain things to my mom because shes a fan but doesnt understand who they heisman guys are and much about alot of the trophy stuff except the ones in the 90s. So weve got more time to kill, head over to the huskers.com store. Wow so much there but so expensive. Who should i happen to run into but Tommy Friggin Frazier i shook his hand and told him he was the best. He said thanks and moved on. Then who else should i happen to see in there orange jackets but the orange bowl comittiee. Then a couple guys from the cotton bowl comittee as well. I end up picking up a game day shirt and a couple other things. We head over to the game day thing on the track field.
So far this has been just awsome already. We head into the track area and see all the people and food. Someone is talking on the radio so i go see who it is. Jonny the friggin Jet Rogers, i listen to him speak for a while about the traditon and what it should mean. After a while he pops out and i get to shake his hand, starts talking about autograph signings and my mom grabs a hat she just got and runs after him. Im laughing my a$$ off as Johnny The Jet Rogers is haulin a$$ with my mom right on his tail. Well you had to pay for autographs so my mom decides to get his. What was really funny is she had no idea who it was. I explained to her latter. I dont know if it was a replica or the real deal but Johnny Rogers Heisman was on the table right in front of me. I snap a picture and head on. Got to see eric crouch and mike rozier as well. We walk around alittle more takeing in the sights, i get to see some of the games on the TV. I had a runza and i will say it was pretty good. As the game gets closer it starts to get colder. I think my mom is regretting watching the game from the field. I hear the tunnel walk start up and me and her get really sad. We want to be there badly. So were like ok one more try.
We head to the west side of the stadium and i see a guy selling tickets. I ask him how much he says 75 for 2. Now at this time we had pretty much spent most of our money, i had 20 and my mom had 40. I said weve only got 60 and started to walk away. He says wait, looks at the tickets and hands them over.
We just stood there for a moment. I hear the can you feel it music start up and we take off running. We got so lost trying to find our seats but they ended up on the north endzone, Section 36c Row 49. Man no one said it was cramped in there. Guy next to me shakes my hand and we shake hands of the other guys around. I ask a couple questions cuz we missed a couple minutes of the game. I start to tier up because i cant believe were there. I dont know what else the stadium was doing but we were rocking, Standing up almost all the game and screaming our heads off. I thought for sure we would lose but we hung in there and as you know the game is history. After the last interception were all screaming, the guy next to me hugs me everyone is screaming and yelling. I have never seen anything like that in my life. I started tiering up again because the day was just so awsome. I knew, i just knew that if i was going to go to a game that this was the one to go to. I felt it in spring and i just wanted to go. All the way back to the car chanting Go Big Red. Chattin with the other sooner fans who i know were down but they all said we deserved to win that game. Getting out of lincoln was kinda a pain in the butt but it was ok. We were both still in awe about about the day we just had.
Things i got from this experience.
I will go to another game.
To say the NU - OU isnt a rivalry is the most outrageous statement ive ever heard. The way they talked it up and showed all the history. Plus having all the heisman and trophy winners there was great. The standing applause for barry switzer was a class act. Of course dr tom got the most but thats to be expected.
Even if you think you cant see a game, just to go there was amazing. Even if we hadnt gotten into the game i still would of had a great time.
Go Big Red, and thanks for the memories.
