The search continued for two masked men who robbed the Pizza Hut in Tecumseh and beat a pair of restaurant employees on Tuesday night.
Investigators had not made an arrest as of late Wednesday, said Johnson County Attorney Julie Smith-Hogancamp. The robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Meanwhile, the two women assaulted in the robbery remained hospitalized Wednesday, a restaurant spokesman said.
The restaurant’s manager and one employee were being treated for facial injuries at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln, said Mark Sulzle, area coach for Staab Management Co. in Grand Island.
“Why would they beat them up? There was no reason for that,” Sulzle said Wednesday, explaining the women were assaulted after the men had taken the cash from the register.
One employee suffered bruises and swelling to her face. The other apparently suffered several injuries that included a fractured eye socket.
The employees called 911 shortly before 10 p.m. to report the robbery.
Police found three female employees at the scene. Sulzle described one of the injured women as middle-aged and the other as approaching retirement age. The third employee is a teenager who works at the restaurant part-time.
No customers were present during the robbery. The pizzeria closes at 10 p.m.
The suspects were reportedly wearing black ski masks, and one was wearing a green camouflage jacket.
An investigation of the robbery is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Tecumseh Police Department at (402) 335-3222.
The Pizza Hut is on U.S. 136 just east of the intersection of Nebraska 50 in Tecumseh, a community of 1,712 about 50 miles southeast of Lincoln.
The restaurant is one of more than 50 Pizza Huts owned by the Grand Island company. Sulzle, who lives in York and has been with the company for 27 years, said he could recall no past robberies that involved attacks on employees.
The employees followed all security procedures, which will be reviewed in the wake of the robbery, Sulzle said.
The Tecumseh Pizza Hut was closed Wednesday, but plans to reopen Thursday, he said.
The well-being of the employees victimized in Tuesday’s robbery is the top concern, Sulzle said.
To her knowledge, Smith-Hogancamp said there was no connection between the robbers and the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.
A Tuesday night burglary was reported at the school in Sterling, a community about 14 miles northeast of Tecumseh. Smith-Hogancamp didn’t know what, if anything, was stolen in the break-in or whether it might be related to the robbery.
